Technical Branch

After you have completed your engineering, you can join the Technical Branch through the Direct
Entry Scheme. Both men and women can use this mode of entry to apply to the Indian Air Force.

Permanent / Short Service Commission
As an Aeronautical Engineer in the Electronics stream, you will be responsible for the
communication and signals required on the Air Force station. You will also be in charge of the
execution of preventive maintenance and servicing of aircraft. With further in-service training, you
could also move to the repair and overhaul divisions of the Indian Air Force.
To join the Aeronautical Engineering (Electronics) stream you must fulfill the following eligibility

After you join the Indian Air Force as an Aeronautical Engineer in the Mechanical stream, you could
be placed at a position that requires you to be involved with preventive maintenance and servicing

Selection Procedure
There is a 4 step selection procedure which is scientific and thorough. You can be a part of Air
Force family going through this process and proving your mettle. For details about the procedure

Step 1 -Scrutiny of Applications
The selection procedure begins immediately after you send your application forms to us. All
application forms are first checked for eligibility after which you will receive a call letter with further
instructions.
If seek entry into the Flying Branch through the NDA or CDSE, your applications need to be sent to
UPSC, New Delhi. UPSC conducts a written test twice a year in April & August (NDA) and April &
September (CDSE). Advertisements for the examinations are released about six months in
advance. Qualifying in these exams take you to step two. If you apply for Short Service Commission
Flying (Pilot) or as an NCC Senior Division ‘C’ Certificate holder, your application is processed by
Air HQ and call letter issued by AFSBs.
If you have applied to the Technical Branch you will be required to appear the Engineering
Knowledge Test (EKT). Similarly, for non tech ground duty branches, you would require to appear
for a Common Entrance Test (CET). If you pass the EKT/CET, you move to the next step. Click

Step 2 - Testing Officer Like Qualities
If you have successfully cleared Step 1, you will receive a call letter to report to any one of the Air
Force Selection Boards located at Dehradun, Varanasi and Mysore. At the Air Force Selection
Boards, you undergo a number of psychological tests, an interview and group activities, which are
collectively called the Officer Like Qualities (OLQ) Tests. These tests are designed to gauge your
potential and suitability as an officer in the Armed Forces.
• The Psychological Tests are written tests that are conducted by a Psychologist.
• The Group Tests are interactive indoor and outdoor tests. We expect active physical
participation from you.
• The Interview involves a personal conversation with our Interviewing Officer.
These tests will be explained to you in detail before they are conducted at the Selection
Board.
The following is the schedule for OLQ Tests:

Phase I of testing gets over on 1st day for all type of entries except NDA/CDSE/NCC/Direct entry for
which it gets over on second day. Only those candidates who qualify in Phase I shall be retained at
AFSB for further testing of Phase II. NDA/CDSE candidates who do not qualify the PABT will still be
tested for their second/third choice.
At the conference held on the last day, all the assessors i.e. the Psychologist, Ground Testing
Officer and the Interviewing Officer, discuss your personality and decide on recommending you or
not. Those recommended by the AFSBs will require filling up certain documents at the Boards and
subsequently moving to the next step.
Step 3 - Conducting of Medical Examinations
If you have applied for the Technical or Ground Duty Branches and are found suitable, you may be
asked to return home and await a call for a medical examination or be sent directly for the medical
examination.
Step 4 -Preparing All India Merit List
An All India Merit List is compiled on the basis of your performance at the AFSB and subject to
being medically fit. Based on the vacancies available, Air HQ would issue joining instructions to join
Air Force Academy for the training.

AIR FORCE OFFICER JOBS
Indian Air Force recruits Indian males and females in the flying, technical or the ground
branches as Officers at various entry levels such as Intermediate (10+2), Graduation,
Engineering and Post Graduation. As an officer one has to make strategies, plan missions and

INTERMEDIATE ENTRY
Indian males in the age group of 16 ½ to 19 years are eligible to join the National Defence
Academy (NDA) in Officer cadre by appearing the examination conducted by the Union Public
Service Commission (UPSC). The candidate should have completed 10+2 with Physics and
Mathematics. The candidate should also have to satisfy certain stipulated medical and physical
standards to be eligible for entry to NDA.
GRADUATE ENTRY
Various branches open to Indian male and female graduates in the officer cadre are Flying
Branch, Technical Branch and Ground Duty Branches. Candidates are short listed after an initial
selection procedure that comprises of four steps such as;
ENGINEERING ENTRY
The Indian Air Force recruits engineers who are in their final or pre-final year of engineering to
join the Technical Branch through University Entry Scheme. There are two schemes such as
Direct Entry Scheme and Institute Membership. Aeronautical Engineering (Electronics &
Mechanical) and Section A and B examination of the Associate Membership exam of the
Institution of Engineers (India) in Electrical, Electronics or Telecommunication students are
eligible for these two schemes respectively.
POST GRADUATE ENTRY
The Air Force offers recruitment in two branches, namely Technical and Ground Duty for Post
Graduates as Aeronautical Engineers (Electronics) as Permanent or Short Service Commission.
FLYING BRANCH
Unmarried Indian males within the age group of 19 to 23 years who have completed graduation
in any discipline with Physics and Mathematics at 10+2 level or who have a bachelor degree in
engineering are eligible for Flying Branch. Male candidates can make entry to the Flying Branch
as permanent commission through Combined Defence Service examination (CDSE) conducted
by UPSC or through National cadet Corps as a senior division 'Certificate holder. However; both
males and females are also eligible to apply for Short Service Commission (SSC) in Flying
Branch for 14 years tenure without extension.
TECHNICAL BRANCH
Unmarried Indian males and females between 18 to 28 years of age who have done their B. E.,
B. Tech in Electronics, Telecommunication, Electrical, Electrical Communication, Computer
Science/Engineering etc. or Diploma in Electronics of Madras Institute of Technology or M Sc
Degree in Physics (With Electronics) or MCA with Mathematics or Graduate Membership
Examination of the Institute of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) are
eligible to apply for Technical Branches.
GROUND DUTY BRANCH
For Ground Duty, candidates have a variety of choices such as Administrative Branch (Air
Traffic Controller and Flight Controller), Accounts Branch, Education Branch, Logistics and
Meteorological Branch. Both males and females between 20 to 25 years of age having a post
graduation degree with minimum of 50% of marks in various disciplines such as Arts,
Commerce, Science, Geography, management and MCA.
RECRUITMENT FOR AIRMEN CADRE
Indian Air Force recruits candidates in both Non-technical and technical trades to support
various functions in the Air Force. The Airmen trade, both non-Technical and technical, are
responsible for a variety of tasks that ranges from general office operations, handling
sophisticated specialist vehicles to weather forecasting.
NON-TECHNICAL TRADE
The Non-Technical Trade is grouped
under three Combatant Groups such as

under Group 'X' are Radio Fitter, Radar Fitter, Missile Fitter (E), Missile Fitter (L), Missile Fitter
(M), Workshop Fitter (B), Workshop Fitter (C), Instrument Fitter Electrical Fitter, Airframe
Fitter, Plant Maintenance Fitter (E), Plant Maintenance Fitter (M), Engine Fitter Weapon Fitter
and Radio Fitter. Combatant Group 'Y' has the trades; Photo Technician, Safety Equipment
Worker, Machinist, Mechanical Transport Technician, Air Defence System Operator, Radio
Technician and Meteorological Assistant.
TRAINING ESTABLISHMENTS
Indian Air Force runs and manages six training establishments, where selected candidates
undergo physical and academic training that makes them accustomed to the life in Indian Air
force. The six training establishments, namely

All the training establishments are equipped with modern infrastructure and the best of the

NATIONAL DEFENCE ACADEMY (NDA)
The National Defence Academy (NDA), situated at Khadakwasla, is a prestigious inter-services
training establishment which trains cadets thoroughly before they are inducted in the defence
services. The cadets have to pass six semesters along with their physical training. The cadets are
trained to acquire the required standards needed for defence services and the overall personality
development.
AIR FORCE ACADEMY (AFA)
Air Force Academy (AFA), Situated 43 km from Hyderabad, at Dundigal is also an Air Force
Base that supports various flying operations and a Flying Training Establishment (FTE). The
Academy provides training in flying and ground subjects to flight cadets and officers of the
Indian Navy and Army, the Coast Guards and officers from friendly foreign countries. AFA
conducts several training programs such as Flying Training, Air Traffic Control Courses, Non-
Technical Ground, Duty Branches and Joint Services Training.
AIR FORCE ADMINISTRATIVE COLLEGE (AFAC)
The Air Force Administrative College (AFAC), the oldest training establishments of the Indian
Air Force, located at Coimbatore conducts training programs for in-service officers of the Air
Force, Navy, Army and officers of friendly foreign countries. The college also trains and
supports officer trainees with the desired skills for their work in the Air Force, inculcating the
service code of conduct. The college offers various courses that can be divided into two
categories; In-Service Training Courses for Officers and Ab-Initio Training Courses for airmen
in the Non-Technical Trades.
AIR FORCE TECHNICAL COLLEGE (AFTC)
The Air Force Technical College (AFTC), located at Jalhalli, prepares young trainee officers to
become Aeronautical Engineers in the Indian Air Force by providing them basic academic
training designed to impart technical knowledge along with the service code of conduct. The
trainees spend duration of 48 weeks before they take on the responsibilities of an officer in the
Indian Air Force. The whole training is divided in to 4 phases such as Initiation, Acclimatization,
Specialization and Becoming an Officer.
FLYING TRAINING ESTABLISHMENTS (FTE)
The Flying Training Establishments (FTE) of the Indian Air Force is established to train pilots
for basic to more complex levels of flying. The five Flying Training Establishments are located
at Dundigal (Air Force Academy), Bidar (Karnataka), Hakimpet (Secunderabad), Allahabad
(Basic Flying Training School) and Yelahanka, Bangalore (Transport Training Wing). The entire
course at the FTEs is divided in to two categories such as Flying Branch comprised of Pre Flying
Training Course (PFTC), Basic Stage and Advanced Stage and Specialization that comprises of
Fighter Aircraft and Transport Aircraft.
TRAINING INSTITUTES (TI)
The training of the Airmen is carried out at the Training Institutes (TIs) of the Indian Air Force
where cadets get specialized training in the Technical or Non-Technical trades. The Indian Air

Application procedure:
Candidates can either send a handwritten/typed application form(on an A4 size paper) according
to the format given in the admission notification or download the application form from the
website: www.careerairforce.nic.in. The candidates have to send the filled application form
along with two passport sized photographs and two self addressed envelopes(size 23 X 10 cm)
and pasted with Rs. 27 postage stamps by ordinary post only. The form has to be send at one of
the centers given in the admission notification which is available at www.careerairforce.nic.in.
Selection Procedure:
Selection in IAF Technical Branches is a multi stage procedure. Candidates are first required to
appear in a Engineering Knowledge Test (EKT)). EKT is of 1 hour duration consisting of
objective questions only. CET has two parts:
Part A: General Engineering
Part B:Specialised Paper for each engineering course:Options are
Mechanical/Aeronautical/Electronics & Instrumentation/Computer Science & Information
Technology

Those who qualify in CET are called for Officer Like Qualities (OLQ) Tests which includes
Psychological tests, intelligence tests, Group Tests and Interview. Final there is a medical test

A. Scheme of Examination
1. The Competitive examination comprises:
(a) Written examination.
(b) Interview for intelligence and personality test (vide Part 'B' of this Appendix) of
such candidates as may be called for interview at one of the Services Selection
Centres.
2. The subjects of the written examination, the time allowed and the maximum
marks allotted to each subject will be as follows:
(a) For Admission to Indian Military Academy, Naval Academy and Air Force Academy.

The maximum marks allotted to the written examination and to the interviews will be
equal for each course i.e. the maximum marks allotted to the written examination
and to the interviews will be 300,300,300 and 200 each for admission to the Indian
Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy and Officers' Training Academy
respectively.
3. The papers in all the subjects will consist of objective type questions only. The
question papers (test booklets) of general knowledge and elementary mathematics
will be set in bilingually in Hindi as well as English .
4. In the question papers, wherever necessary, questions involving the metric
system of Weights and Measures only will be set.
5. Candidates must write the papers in their own hand. In no circumstances will
they be allowed the help of a scribe to write answers for them.
6. The Commission have discretion to fix qualifying marks in any or all the
subjects of the examination.
7. The candidates are not permitted to use calculator for answering objective type
papers (Test Booklets). They should not therefore, bring the same inside the
Examination Hall.
B. Standard and Syllabus of the Examination
Standard
The standard of the papers in Elementary Mathematics will be of Matriculation level.
The standard of papers in other subjects will approximately be such as may be
expected of a graduate of an Indian University.
Syllabus
English (Code No. 01)
The question paper will be designed to test the candidates' understanding of English
and workmanlike use of words.
General Knowledge (Code No. 02)
General Knowledge including knowledge of current events and of such matters of
everyday observation and experience in their scientific aspects as may be expected of
an educated person who has not made a special study of any scientific subject. The
paper will also include questions on History of India and Geography of a nature which
candidate should be able to answer without special study.
Elementary Mathematics (Code No. 03)
Arithmetic
Number System-Natural numbers, Integers, Rational and Real numbers. Fundamental
operations addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, Square roots, Decimal
fractions.
Unitary method-time and distance, time and work, percentages, applications to
simple and compound interest, profit and loss, ratio and proportion, variation.
Elementary Number Theory- Division algorithm. Prime and composite numbers. Tests
of divisibility by 2,3,4,5,9 and 11. Multiples and factors. Factorisation Theorem.
H.C.F. and L.C.M. Euclidean algorithm, Logarithms to base 10, laws of logarithms, use
of logarithmic tables.
Algebra
Basic Operations, simple factors, Remainder Theorem, H.C.F., L.C.M. Theory of
polynomials, solutions of quadratic equations, relation between its roots and
coefficients (Only real roots to be considered). Simultaneous linear equations in two
unknowns-analytical and graphical solutions. Simultaneous linear equations in two
variables and their solutions. Practical problems leading to two simultaneous linear
equations or inequations in two variables or quadratic equations in one variable &
their solutions. Set language and set notation, Rational expressions and conditional
identities, Laws of indices.
Trigonometry
Sine x, cosine x, Tangent x when 00 < x < 900
Values of sin x, cos x and tan x, for x = 00, 300, 450, 600 and 900
Simple trigonometric identities.
Use of trigonometric tables.
simple cases of heights and distances.
Geometry
Lines and angles, Plane and plane figures, Theorems on (i) Properties of angles at a
point (ii) Parallel lines, (iii) Sides and angles of a triangle, (iv) Congruency of
triangles, (v) Similar triangles, (vi) Concurrence of medians and altitudes, (vii)
Properties of angles, sides and diagonals of a parallelogram, rectangle and square
(viii) Circles and its properties including tangents and normals, (ix) Loci.
Mensuration
Areas of squares, rectangles, parallelograms, triangle and circle. Areas of figures
which can be split up into these figures (Field Book), Surface area and volume of
cuboids, lateral surface and volume of right circular cones and cylinders, surface area
and volume of spheres.
Statistics
Collection and tabulation of statistical data, Graphical representation frequency
polygons, histograms, bar charts, pie charts etc. Measures of central tendency.
Intelligence and personality test
In addition to the interview the candidates will be put to Intelligence Tests both
verbal and non-verbal, designed to assess their basic intelligence. They will also be
put to Group Tests such as group discussions, group planning, outdoor group tasks,
and asked to give brief lectures on specified subjects. All these tests are intended to
judge the mental calibre of a candidate. In broad terms, this is really an assessment
of not only his intellectual qualities but also his social traits and interests in current
affairs.
