High School towards Academic Performance
Introduction
Social media is a phrase that we throw around a lot these days, often to
describe what post on sites and apps like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram,
Snapchat, and others. But if we use the term to describe a site like Facebook,
and also a then it starts to get more confusing. (Nations, 2017)
Today’s world is a global village. Everyone is connected to one another in
this vast network generated by the internet. As said by Marshall Mcluhan a
philosopher of communication theory, “The new electronic independence re-
creates the world in the image of a global village”. This electronic independence
is inherently dependent upon the internet. It illuminates the lives of thousands of
people by spreading knowledge internationally, theory making is a global
citizens.
According to Karadkar (2015), communicating and free sharing of
thoughts among people were restricted by long distance, nationality or/and
religion. But how, even these barriers cannot stop the flow of information and
knowledge. The new world of social networking allows free sharing of thoughts.
Online social networks are created websites such as Facebook, which has
emerged as a giant in this world. So how these networks affect our education?
How do they influence the lives of our students?
As of 2015, the world’s largest social networking company, Facebook has
1.49 billion active users, and the number of users is increasing every year. One
of the most interesting things to look at is the increasing number of student users
on such social networking sites. As per the survey conducted by PEW Research
Center, 72 percent of high school and 78 college students spend time on
Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. These numbers indicate of much the students’
community is involved in this virtual world of social networking.
Based on studies, about 50% of the surveyed students said to have more
than three accounts on various networking sites including instagram, twitter,
tumblr, snapchat, etc. While the data seems to indicate that technology is taking
over the lives of high school students only 36.4% of the teenagers said that it
regularly interfaces with their school work.
On the other hand, social media on its characteristics and capability helps
a lot on students’ performance.
According to Staff (2016), there are many things that social media
technologies allow a person to do. For instance, social networking sites allow
One to share any form of data-ranging from a simple picture or image to the arge
pads or links of websites which contain a large amount of information.
Social networking technologies also allow one to share thought or two. It
helps a person at one and of the world connect and exchange ideas with a
person at the other end of the world. It is not just a source of entertainment but
influential too. One can adopt to gain positive returns in education.
Social networking sites although has been recognized as an important
resource for education today, studies however shows that students use social
networking sites such as Facebook for fun, to kill time, to meet existing friends or
to make new ones ( Lampe et.al, 2007). Although it has been put forward that
students spends much time or participating in social networking activities, with
many students blaming the various social networking sites for their steady
decrease in grade point averages (Lee et.al 2009). It also show that only few
students are aware of academic and professional networking opportunities the
sites offered.
