Necole Ira M. Bautista Grade 10-Newton

The document contains examples of writing functions to represent various real-world scenarios involving rates and fees that change based on time or quantity. It includes writing piecewise functions to represent computer rental fees that change every 2 hours, evaluating functions at given values, and combining basic functions using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. It concludes with writing a function rule to represent parking fees at a mall that charges a flat rate for the first hour and an additional fee for every hour after.

1. A person is earning P600 per day to do a certain job. Express the total salary
S as a function of the number n of days that the person works.
S= 600 n
Earning Per day = 600

Let say working day = n

Total Salary = S

Total Salary = Earning Per day * Number of Days

2. A computer shop charges 20 pesos per hour (or a fraction of an hour) for the
first two hours and an additional 10 pesos per hour for each succeeding hour.
Represent your computer rental fee using the function R(t) where t is the
number of hours you spent on the computer.

The rental charges of the computer shop is an illustration of a piece-wise

function. The function for the computer rental fee is:

Given that:

Number of hours

Rental charges

The first 2 hours are charged at 20 pesos per hour.

So, we have:

For hours greater than 2, the rate is calculated as follows:

Total = First 2 hours + 10 x Extra hours

So, we have:

Collect like terms

Hence, the function is:

3. Evaluate g(x) = |𝑥^3 − 3𝑥^2 − 1| at x= -4

Substitute x and evaluate.

g(-4) = |− 4^3 − 3(− 4)^2 − 1|

g(-4) = |− 64 − 48 − 1|

g(-4) = |− 112 − 1|

g(-4) = |− 113|= 113

4. .

a.)f (1.25)= [x - 4]

f (1.25)= [12.5 - 4]

f (1.25)= 8.5
b.)f(-3)= 9- (x)^2

f (-3)= 9 - (-3)^2

f (-3)= 9 - 9

f (12.5)= 0

c.)f (5)= 𝑥 + 7

f (5)= 5 + 7

f (5)= 2 3 →f (5)= 3.46

d.) f(1.5)= 9- (x)^2

f (1.5)= 9 - (1.5)^2

f (1.5)= 9 - 2.25

f (1.5)= 6.75

5. f(x) = x - 5 , g(x)= x^2 + 1

Find:

(a) (f + g) ( x) = f (x) + g (x)

f (x) + g (x) = (x-5) + (x^2 + 1)→ f (x) + g (x)= x^2 + x- 4

(b) f - g= (x-5) - (x^2 + 1)=

(f - g) ( x) = f (x) - g (x)

f (x) - g (x) = (x-5) - (x^2 + 1) → (f - g) ( x) = -x^2 + x-6

(c) f * g= (x-5) * (x^2 + 1)=

(f * g) ( x) = f (x) * g (x)

f (x) * g (x) = (x-5) * (x^2 + 1)

f (x) * g (x) = x^3 - 5x^2 + x- 5

(d) f/ g= (x-5) / (x^2 + 1)=

(f / g) ( x) = f (x) / g (x)

f (x) / g (x) = (x-5) / (x^2 + 1)

f (x) / g (x) = x/ (x^2 + 1)-5/ (x^2 + 1)

6. Inter Global Mall charges ₱20.00 for the first hour or a fraction of an hour for
the parking fee. An additional ₱10.00 is charged for every additional hour of parking.
The parking area operates from 7 am to 12 midnight every day.

a. Write a function rule for the problem

b. How much will be charged to the car owner if he parked his car from 7 am to 3
pm?

c. How much will be charged to a car owner who parked his car from 9 am to 11:30
pm?

A. x = 10(y + 1), B. ₱90.00, C. ₱160.00

a.) Let us assume that total charges are equal to x and the total number of
hours is y.

→charges for the first hour = P20

→charges for next (y - 1)hours = P10(y - 1)

So,

Total charges for y hours :-

→ x = 20 + 10(y - 1)

→ x = 20 + 10y - 10
→ x = 10 + 10y

→ x = 10(y + 1)

b.) Total time given = 7AM to 3PM = 8 hours.

Therefore,

→ Total charge for 8 hours = 10(8 + 1) = 10 * 9 = ₱90.00.

c.) Time period is 9AM to 11:30 PM = 14 hours , 30 minutes = 15 hours. { since the

fraction of an hour also have the same fees.}

Therefore,

→ Total charges of car owner = 10(15 + 1) = 10 * 16 = ₱160.00
