The Outsiders Journal

Journal prompts will be given at the end of each chapter. Each entry should be a
minimum of 150 words. Turn in your journal to each specified assignment. (i.e. One
document for several assignments)

Entry #1: “Tuff Time” – Who are you? What makes you unique? What factors influence
who you are? (family, friends) Why? Ponyboy has faced hardships in his life. What are
yours?

Entry #2: Why is it so difficult for Johnny to stand up to Dally at the drive-in? Have you
ever had to stand up to a friend? What was this issue? How'd you do it? What
happened when you did? What happened after? Are you still friends or did it tarnish
the relationship?

Entry #3: The Socs and greasers sure seem to make a lot of judgements, only to find
out they are more similar than they care to believe. Talk about a time when you may
have misjudged someone? What did you think at first? What did you later learn? OR--
Talk about a time when YOU were misjudged. Explain in as much detail as possible.

Entry #4 Referring to Dallas, Ponyboy states, “It would be a miracle if Dallas could love
anything. The fight for self-preservation had hardened him beyond caring.” Do you think
a person could really be too hardened to love?
AND/OR
Did Johnny commit 'murder'? Discuss in detail.

Entry #5: Early in chapter five, why is Ponyboy reluctant to have his hair cut? Why is it
so important to him? Is there anything in your appearance about which you feel that
strongly?
OR
Johnny thinks that Dallas is gallant because when he was arrested for something
Two-Bit had done, Dallas just took the sentence without mentioning anything he knew.
Some people would say Dallas was stupid for going to jail for something Two-Bit had
done. What’s your opinion?

Entry #6: What “other side” of Dallas is revealed in this chapter?

AND/OR
Do the three boys prove themselves to be heroes in Chapter 6, according to your
definition?
Entry #7: We have been discussing CHARACTERIZATION throughout this novel. Last
journal, I asked you to focus on Dally. For this entry, focus on other characters. Who
has changed? How? Given new information we have learned, who is different than we
may have thought? How so?

Entry #8: Have you ever been let down by a parent? A friend? What happened?
OR Cherry is sorry that Johnny is in the hospital but will not go to see him. Would you
feel the same way?

Entry #9: What is your viewpoint about fighting? Is there ever a good reason to be
involved in one?

Entry #10: In chapter eleven, why Pony might rather have anyone's hate than their pity
(p.162)? Do you agree or disagree? Is it better/worse to be pitied than hated? Have
you ever experienced this? Explain.

Entry #11: What do you predict to be the ending of the book? What happens to our
characters? Is anything else major going to happen?

Entry #12: The word outsider is never used. Why? Who is/are the outsider(s)? What
is the significance of the title as it relates to the story?
