Arrow G2 Manual

The document is the user manual for the Arrow 12HE 2G headphone amplifier. It provides instructions on connecting an audio player and headphones to the device, details how the automatic power switch works, explains how to charge the battery, and describes the functions of the bass, gain, cross, and imp adjustment switches. It also lists the change logs for previous versions of the Arrow amplifier.

Arrow 12HE 2G (High Efficiency)

User Manual

Connecting Your Audio Player

The Arrow headphone amp has two input jacks (each 3.5mm/1/8'' size). Connect
your audio player with one of these input jacks. The front input jack (next to the
volume control) will overwrite the rear input jack. The rear input jack can also be
used to charge the amp with a special cable which is still in development. Thus don't
use the rear input jack for charging now.

Connecting Your Headphones

Use one of the headphone output jacks (each 3.5mm/1/8'' size) to connect one or
two pair of headphones. The amp has enough power to drive two headphones at the
same time. Headphones with about the same impedance rating will have the same
volume. If you use headphones with different impedance ratings the headphones
with the lower impedance rating will have more volume.

Automatic Power Switch

The Arrow 2G doesn't have an external power switch. It will automatically turn on
when an input signal (music) can be detected. After the input signal has stopped the
red LED will dim after 60 seconds and the amp will switch off after 90 seconds. When
the battery is nearly drained and the red LED is blinking the turn-off times are 60
seconds (slow blink) or 30 seconds (fast blink). After the battery was completely
drained the amp will not turn on and the red LED will blink very fast as long as a
signal can be detected.

Turn off times:

90 seconds (red LED shines steady)
60 seconds (red LED blinks slowly - about 1 time per second)
30 seconds (red LED blinks fast - about 3 times per second)

Charging the Battery

Connecting the amp to the USB port of your computer will charge the battery. As
long as the green LED shines the battery is being charged. A completely drained
battery needs 4-5 hours to get fully charged (assuming the USB port can deliver
500mA). A capacity of 80% will be achieved after 3 hours. The amp can be used
while charging. Be aware that the LED color changes to amber when the amp is
turned on and being charged at the same time as thered and the green LEDs shine
together.

Blinking of the Red LED

A blinking red LED indicates that the battery needs to be charged.

red LED shines steady -> no need to charge the battery (more than 1 hour left)
red LED blinks slowly -> battery needs to be charged (40-60 minutes left)
red LED blinks fast -> battery is almost completely drained (15-25 minutes left)

After the battery was completely drained the amp will not turn on and the red LED
will blink very fast as long as a signal can be detected.

BASS, GAIN, CROSS, IMP Adjustment Switches

The four switches have the following function:

BASS - improves lower frequencies (bass)

GAIN - adjusts the amplification gain (volume range) to 6dB, 12dB, 21dB; using a
lower gain results in lower noise, otherwise the sound is the same
IMP - adjusts the output resistor to 10, 70 or 110 ohm, a higher resistor cuts off
high frequencies, but the result depends on the impedance rating of your
headphones - just use the value that you like most
CROSS - the crossfeed simulates external speakers in a manner that the right ear
hears music from the left speaker and vice versa -- the result is a more natural
listening experience

Change Log
Arrow 1G
• Since mid February 2010: Improved sensitivity of automatic
switch (will not turn off accidentally)
• Since April 2010: Nuts are directly soldered on the circuit board
(will not get loose)

Arrow G2.0
• Second headphone jack
• No real power switch
• Deeper bass boost 9dB + 9dB
• Longer battery run time (up to 50 hours)
• Film input caps
• Lower ESR power rail caps and decoupling caps
• Rear switches are more recessed (less sticking out)
• Better firmware (faster power shifting, more precise battery
voltage detection etc.)

Arrow G2.1
• New pre-amp (less switch-on click noise)

Arrow G2.2
• Change of output resistors from 10/75/120 to 0/65/110 (better
synergy with some IEMs like Triple.Fi 10 which sound weird with
any output resistor)

Arrow G3.0
• Change of output resistors to 0/20/65 (better control of treble)
• Additional ceramic capacitors to lower impedance of tantalum
caps (virtual better treble but barely noticeable)
• Much faster production (I will observe the assembly of the PCBs
myself)
