Belt Friction Experiment Manual - Updated

This document outlines the objectives and required sections for a student-created lab manual on an experiment to determine belt friction and the effects of wrap angle and tension on power transmission for belt drive mechanisms. The experiment aims to 1) find the coefficient of friction for V-belts and flat belts, and 2) determine how wrap angle and belt tension impact the power transmitted. The lab manual must include sections on objectives, theory, equipment description, procedure, data collection, analysis, discussion, and references.

Experiment 4: Belt Friction (Open ended & unguided experiment)

Objectives:

1. To determine the coefficient of friction for “V” belt & Flat Belt
2. To determine the effect of angle of wrap to the power that can be transmitted for a belt drive
mechanism/system.
3. To determine the effect of belt tensions to the power that can be transmitted for a belt drive
mechanism/system.

The lab manual for the experiment created by student must have at least of the below items.

1.a Objectives

1. Theory

Any theory related to the experiment should be included. The theory must be clearly explained and
complete with diagrams where necessary. The relevant equations should be introduced.

2. Equipment / Description of Experimental Apparatus

A list of the equipment used should be included. Sketch of the equipment should also be included
where necessary. A Sketch of equipment set up must be included.

Flat bed

Angle of wrap 𝛼 𝑜𝑟 𝜃
loose/slack
Angle of Contact 𝛼 𝑜𝑟 𝜃

tight
3. Procedure

This is a step by step explanation of the procedure to be carried out for the experiment. The description
does not have to be very lengthy, but should have enough detail so that you know what to be done.

4. Data and Observations (Blank Data Sheet)

Data to be collected. Data table to be constructed. Graph to be plotted. Each table, figure and graph
should be labeled and numbered.

5. Analysis (Calculations)

Analysis to be conducted. The data obtained will be analyzed with a view toward fulfilling the objective
of the experiment.

6. Discussion

What to be discussed for the experiment with a view toward fulfilling the objective of the experiment.

7. References
List down the references used to prepare the lab manual.
