1. What is the next shape?

2. What is the next number?

What is the 10th number?

0, 2, 6, 10, 14,

3. What is the next number?

What is the 8th number?

8, 3, -2, -7, -12,

DISCUSSION
(MATH10-Q1W1F1)

Sequence

A sequence is a set of numbers written in a specific order:

LESSON 1.2
1.1 Arithmetic
Events, Sequence
Sample Spaces and Probability

The following are examples of sequences of numbers:

a. 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, ….
b. 10, 7, 4, 1, -2, …
c. 0.6, 1.7, 2.8, 3.9, …

Each sequence is a set of numbers, thus order is important. For some sequences of numbers, a
rule can be found to get from one number to the next. For example, for the sequence in
a. The rule is add 2
b. The rule is subtract 3
c. The rule is add 1.1

The numbers of a sequence are called terms. The nth term of a sequence is denoted by the
symbol tn . So, the first term is t1, the 12th term is t12, and so on.
.

Arithmetic Sequence

An arithmetic sequence is a list of numbers with a definite pattern. If you take any
number in the sequence then subtract it by the previous one and the result is always the same
or constant then it is an arithmetic sequence.
The constant difference in all pairs of consecutive or successive numbers in a sequence is
called the common difference, denoted by the letter d. We use the common difference to go
from one term to another. How? Take the current term and add the common difference to get
to the next term, and so on. That is how the terms in the sequence are generated.

 If the common difference between consecutive terms is positive, we say that the sequence is
increasing.
 On the other hand, when the difference is negative we say that the sequence is decreasing.
LESSON 1.2
1.1 Arithmetic
Events, Sequence
Sample Spaces and Probability

Example 1: Find the next term in the sequence below.

First, find the common difference of each pair of consecutive numbers.

 15−7 = 8
 23−15 = 8
 31−23 = 8

Since the common difference is 8 or written as d=8, we can find the next term after 31 by adding 8 to
it. Therefore, we have 31 + 8 = 39.

Where:
an = the term that you want to find
a1 = first term in the list of ordered numbers
n = the term position (ex: for 5th term, n = 5)
d = common difference of any pair of consecutive or adjacent numbers

LET’S PUT THIS FORMULA IN ACTION!

Example 1: Find the 35th term in the arithmetic sequence 3, 9, 15, 21, ……
There are three things needed in order to find the 35th term using this formula:
LESSON 1.2
1.1 Arithmetic Sequence

 the first term (a1)

 the common difference between consecutive terms (d)
 and the term position (n)

From the given sequence, we can easily get the first term and the common difference. The
term position is just the n value in the nth term, thus in the 35th term, n = 35.

Therefore, the known values that we will substitute in the arithmetic formula are:

Solution:

Example 2: Find the first four terms using the arithmetic sequence formula given the first term and
the common difference.
Given: a1 = 0, d = 3
Solution:
Using the formula ( an = a1 + (n-1) d ), substitute the given. Since the first
term is already given, we will start to solve for the second term.

The term position is The term position is The term position is

just the n value in the just the n value in the just the n value in the
nth term, thus in the nth term, thus in the nth term, thus in the
2nd term, n = 2. 3rd term, n = 3. 4th term, n = 4.

an = a1 + (n-1) d an = a1 + (n-1) d an = a1 + (n-1) d

a2 = 0 + (2-1) 3 a3 = 0 + (3-1) 3 a4 = 0 + (4-1) 3
a2 = 0 + (1) 3 a2 = 0 + (2) 3 a4 = 0 + (3) 3
a2 = 0 + 3 a2 = 0 + 6 a4 = 0 + 9
a2 = 3 a2 = 6 a4 = 9

Answer: The first four terms are 0, 3, 6, 9.

LESSON 1.3 Arithmetic Means

INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY
(MATH10-Q1W1E2)

In this lesson, you will learn about geometric means and the process on how they are
generated.

Activity 1: What is missing?

Find the missing term in each arithmetic sequence.
1. 3, 12, , , 39
2. 8, 3, , , -17
3. 5, 12, , , 33
4. 2, 9, , , 30
5. -2, 4, , , 22

Were you able to get the missing term in each sequence? Let us
discuss a systematic way of finding the missing terms of an arithmetic
sequence.
LESSON 1.3 Arithmetic Means
.

DISCUSSION
(MATH10-Q1W1F1)

Lesson 1.3 Arithmetic Means

Finding a certain number of terms between two given terms

of an arithmetic sequence is a common task in studying arithmetic
sequence. The terms between any two consecutive terms of an
arithmetic sequence are known as arithmetic means.

An arithmetic mean of two numbers, a and b, is simply their average. Using the
arithmetic mean we can also form a sequence.

Since our common difference is 2, we can now provide

the 3 arithmetic means between 8 and 16.

Example 2: Insert 4 arithmetic means between 5 and 25.

Solution: Since we required inserting four terms, then there will be six terms in all.
Let a1 = 5 and a6 = 25. We will insert a2, a3, a4, a5 as shown below:
5, a2, a3, a4, a5, 25
We need to get the common difference. Let us use a6 = a1 + 5d to solve for d.
Substituting the given values for a6 and a1, we obtain 25 = 5 + 5d. So, d = 4.
Using the value of d, we can now get the values for a2, a3, a4, and a5.
Thus, a2 = 5 + 4(1) = 9, a3 = 5 + 4(2) = 13, a4 = 5 + 4(3) = 17 and a5 = 5 + 4(4) = 21.
The 4 arithmetic means between 5 and 25 are 9, 13, 17 and 21.

challenging? Let us now discuss how to find the sum of the first n terms of an
arithmetic sequence.

DISCUSSION
(MATH10-Q1W1F1)

Lesson 1.4 Arithmetic Series

An arithmetic series is the sum of the terms in an arithmetic sequence with a definite
number of terms.
LESSON 1.4 Arithmetic Series

Sn = Sum of arithmetic sequence

an = the term that you want to find
a1 = first term in the list of ordered numbers
n = number of terms
d = common difference of any pair of consecutive or adjacent numbers

Example 1: In the arithmetic sequence -3, 4, 11, 18 …., find the sum of the 20 terms.
Given:
arithmetic sequence -3, 4, 11, 18
first term ( a1 ) -3
common difference 4 – ( -3 ) = 7
number of terms 20
Solution:

Use Formula 2 to find the sum. S20 = [ 2a1 + ( n – 1 )d ]

Substitute the given to the formula S20 = [2(-3) + ( 20 – 1 )(7)]
