Question 23 (6 marks)
The properties of the elements vary periodically with their atomic weights. This is known
as the periodic law and it was demonstrated by Dimitri Mendeleev in 1869. Today we use
atomic number to arrange elements to show their periodic properties.
The table below shows the atomic radius of the second period elements.
Atomic number 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10
Atomic radius (pm) 134 90 82 77 75 73 71 69
(a) Plot the data on the grid below. 3
(b) Explain the trend in atomic radius as atomic number increases across a period and 3
down a group.

Question 27 (6 marks)
A galvanic cell was made by connecting two half cells. One half-cell was made by putting
a tin electrode in 1.0 mol L-1 tin nitrate solution. The other half-cell was made by putting a
copper electrode in 1.0 mol L-1 copper nitrate solution. The two half cells were connected
using a salt bridge and the electrodes were connected to a voltmeter.
(a) Write the half equation for each cell then calculate the theoretical voltage for this 3
galvanic cell.
(b) Draw and label a diagram showing this galvanic cell. Label the anode and cathode 3
and the direction of electron flow.

Question 28 (7 marks)
A student carried out a first-hand investigation by reacting copper powder with silver nitrate
solution in a polystyrene cup. The cup was placed into a 250 mL beaker. A thermometer
was used to stir the contents of the cup and measure the temperature change.
The following measurements were recorded.
Mass of copper powder 1.0 grams
Volume of silver nitrate solution 200 mLs
Concentration of silver nitrate solution 0.1 molL-1
Initial temperature of water 21.5 0C
Final temperature 23.0 0C
Specific heat capacity of water 4.18 x103 Jkg-1 K-1
Assume the heat capacity of the solution is the same as water.
(a) Write a balanced equation for this reaction. 1
(b) Calculate the number of moles of silver nitrate available. 1
(c) Calculate the number of moles of copper needed to fully react with the silver nitrate. 1
(d) Which chemical is the limiting reagent? 1
(e) Calculate the enthalpy change for this reaction per mole of copper. 3
