Criterion C: Processing and Evaluating - PART 1: 1. Research Question

This document provides instructions for an experiment to investigate how the temperature of water affects the rate of dissolving sugar. It outlines the research question, materials needed, procedure, and sections for recording data in a table and presenting it in a graph. Students will add 10g of sugar to 3 beakers containing water at different temperatures (cold, warm, and boiling) and measure the time it takes for the sugar to fully dissolve in each beaker. They will then present their results in a data table and graph.

Criterion C: Processing and evaluating – PART 1

1. RESEARCH QUESTION

□ How does the temperature affect the rate of dissolving a solute in water?

2. MATERIALS

These materials you should have before you start the experiment:
• 3 beakers
• 3 small cups
• 3 spoons
• A measuring cup
• Water cooker
• 30 g of sugar
• Oven mitt
• Dark colored paper
• Weighing scale
• Thermometer
• Timer/stopwatch

3. PROCEDURE

Follow the steps of the procedure.

1. Fill the 3 small cups with 10 g of sugar. Use the weighing scale and a spoon for this.
2. Cook water with the water cooker.
3. Fill beaker 1 with 100 ml of cold water.
4. Fill beaker 2 with 50 ml of cold water and 50 ml of boiling water.
BE CAREFULL, DON’T HOLD THE BEAKER WHILE POURING THE HOT WATER.
AFTERWARDS, USE THE OVEN MITT TO HOLD THE BEAKER.

5. Fill beaker 3 with 100 ml of boiling water.
BE CAREFULL, DON’T HOLD THE BEAKER WHILE POURING THE HOT WATER.
AFTERWARDS, USE THE OVEN MITT TO HOLD THE BEAKER.
6. Put the three beakers on the dark colored paper.
7. Measure the temperature of the water in the three beakers and write it down here:
• Temperature beaker 1: ...........................................................................................
• Temperature beaker 2: ...........................................................................................
• Temperature beaker 3: ...........................................................................................
8. Add 10 g of sugar to every beaker at the same time and immediately start the timer.
9. You can stir the solutions, but do it exactly the same way for all three beakers and use a
different spoon for every beaker.
10. Measure how long it takes for every beaker to dissolve the sugar and register the result
here:
• Time beaker 1: ........................................................................................................
• Time beaker 2: ........................................................................................................
• Time beaker 3: ........................................................................................................

Free space for you to make notes.

4. PRESENT DATA : TABLE
Data table must include:
• Appropriate title
• Draw the table with straight lines (use a ruler)
• Add headings with quantity and units.
Don’t include calculations in the table.

Now turn your data into a table.

Chemistry Criterion C: Mixtures 3

5. PRESENT DATA : GRAPH
Data graph must include:
• Same appropriate title
• Draw the two axes with straight lines
• Correct and appropriate scale (use ticks)
• Correct labelling of the axis
o Independent on the horizontal axis, dependent on the vertical axis
o Units within parenthesis, eg. V(ml)
• Observations plotted correctly
• Draw the best fit through the plotted points
• Legend (if neede)

Now turn your data into a graph.
