DRAWING CUBE Part One: Basic Structure of Objects: Materials

This document provides instructions for drawing a cube by focusing on establishing an understanding of basic perspective techniques. It discusses holding a pencil correctly to draw straight lines, and how changing an observer's eye level affects the appearance of shapes and objects. The key concepts of vanishing point and perspective are introduced, with vanishing point defined as an imaginary point where parallel lines appear to converge based on an observer's eye level. Examples are given of how a cube would be drawn when placed at, below, or above the eye level, with its lines rising or falling to the corresponding vanishing points. Mastering eye level and vanishing points are emphasized as important foundations for developing artistic skills in perspective and observation.

1. “Eye level”

Most students fail in their attempts at drawing

because they’re unaware of “eye level”. It is
such a simple concept so it maybe the reason
why it is always overlooked.

“Eye level” refers to the height at which your

eyes observe an object. Try to master this so it
becomes part of you. It is very important to your
development of an artist.
CHANGING SHAPES AND EYE LEVEL:

To demonstrate “eye level” try to:

1. Line prone on the floor=
Notice that you see the bottom, not the
top, of most objects.

2. Now sit up and notice the difference;

move to a chair and again observe that as
you raise your eye level, the top planes of
objects come into view.

3. If you were to climb a ladder to the

ceiling, everything below you would
show its top plane.

Sounds simple, doesn’t it? Well it is!

VANISHING POINTS

A. The cubic form in Figure A is seen at eye

level, and shows only two of its six sides.
Its horizontal lines converge down to and
up to their respective vanishing point.

What is vanishing point?

1. Vanishing point= is an imaginary point on
the eye level, or horizon, where the
parallel edges of a cubic form appear to
converge and meet.
What is Perspective?
2. Perspective=
a. Converging lines, eye level and
vanishing points all add up to
perspective. It’s a word of Latin
origin meaning “to look through.”
b. In other words, you view an
object as though it were
transparent and you could see all
its sides-front and back.
c. All you have to do to draw an
object in perspective is to
observe closely.

Answer these questions to sharpen your power

of observation.

1. What’s the angle and length of one edge

compared to another?
2. What’s the length and width of a plane in
relation to its neighbor?

B. When you place the cubic from below

eye level, all its lines rise to the vanishing
points.
C. When you place the cubic form above the
eye level, all the lines of the cube go
down to their vanishing points.
