Continuous Assessment Test -I, August 2014

Programme : B.Tech Semester : Fall 2014-15

Course Title : Modern Physics Course Code : PHY102
School : School of Advanced Sciences Slot :
Duration : 1 Hour 30 minutes Max. Marks : 50

Constants: e = 1.602x10-19 C; kB = 1.38 x 10-23 JK-1; me = 9.1x10-31kg; 1 eV = 1.6 x 10-19 J.

Part-A

Answer all questions (4 x 5 = 20 Marks)

Write the Wein's and Rayleigh-Jeans blackbody spectral distribution equations. Which part of 2+1
1 blackbody spectrum these laws predict? Show them pictorially and highlight the UV catastrophe. +2

Which experimental results demonstrated the existence of de Broglie waves? Briefly explain this
2 1+4
experimental setup and the results.

Compute the de Broglie wavelength of: (i) an electron moving with 10 eV kinetic energy and (ii)
3 3+2
a grain of sand (m= 1mg) blown by the wind of 20 ms-1 in a dessert.
4 Write down any four properties of the nanomaterials. State the Moore's law and depict the same. 2+3

Part-B
Answere all questions (3 x 10 = 30)

Derive Planck’s blackbody spectral energy distribution formula from his assumptions. Deduce
5 6+4
Wein's law as well as Rayleigh-Jeans blackbody radiation law from the above law.
Derive an expression for change in photon wavelength in terms of its scattering angle and
6 10
scattering object's mass.
A free subatomic particle is trapped in an infinitely deep potential well of length ''L''. Derive the 7+3
7 particle's wavefunction and energy in terms dimensions of the well ''L''. Illustrate the ground
state and the first excited state wavefunctions and energy of the particle.
