Pure Substance and mixture-SOPHIA THERESE CANON

This document provides instructions for a science assignment comparing pure substances and mixtures. Students are asked to complete a Venn diagram identifying three examples of each and their key differences. Pure substances are uniform throughout and cannot be broken down further, while mixtures can be separated into simpler materials and have varying properties. Examples given are baking soda, dry ice, and blood/coffee mixtures. The document also provides a knowledge check asking students to identify separation techniques like filtration, distillation, and magnetic separation that could be used to separate specific substance mixtures.

Activation of Prior Knowledge Exam 2

Instructions: You have learned the difference between pure substances and mixtures. Identify the
matter if is a pure substance or mixture based from the description on each item. On the space before
each item. Write PURE SUBSTANCE if it is a pure substance.

PURE SUBSTANCE 6. Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide, or CO2. Dry ice may be used as a
cooling agent and contains two oxygen atoms bonded to a carbon atom.

MIXTURE__________7. Instant coffee is made by dissolving a powder in hot water.

PURE SUBSTANCE 8. Baking soda is the common name for sodium bicarbonate, or NaHCO 3.
It can be produced through chemical reactions involving carbon dioxide and sodium
hydroxide.

MIXTURE__________9. Cake batter is a substance that may contain flour, eggs and sugars
mixed by hand or with an electric mixer.
MIXTURE__________10. Blood is a fluid found in the bodies of humans and other animals.
It can be physically separated into plasma, red blood cells and white blood cells.
