RECENT EVENTS ON CAMPUS:

Innovation in the FMCG Sector: IIMB Alumni Association


presented the 2nd edition of Saturday Musings on 25th
Feb, 2017. This was a forum for interaction between
industry leaders, alumni, faculty and students. The
panelists were Nirupama Kaushik (PGP 1991),
Brandscapes, Sanjay Singhal (PGP 1995), COO, ITC Dairy
and Beverages, and Kapil Khamboj (PGP 1999), Vice
President, Johnson and Johnson. The key note talk was
delivered by Prof. Sai Yayavaram on “Innovation in India:
Opportunities and challenges”.

On Demonetization: The PGPEM organized a panel session on Demonetization on 25th Feb, 2017. The
venue was IIMB Auditorium. The speakers were Professor Vivek Moorthy, faculty, Economics and
Social Sciences Area IIMB, Debashis Basu, Co-Founder and Editor of MoneyLife (a financial news portal)
and Sathvik Vishwananth, Founder and CEO, Unocoin , a Bit coin company based out of Bangalore.

Post Budget Insights: IIMB’s Centre for Public Policy (CPP)


hosted a panel discussion on Post Budget Insights on 19th
Feb, 2017. Professor Rupa Chanda, RBI Chair Professor in
Economics, IIMB moderated the panel discussion on the
yearlong implications of the Union Budget 2017 organized
by the Centre for Public Policy of IIM Bangalore, in
partnership with the students, Public Policy Club on 19th
Feb, 2017 at IIMB. IIMB faculty, students and alumni were
present during this panel discussion.

Artificial Intelligence: “The opportunities and challenges”: Feb, 2017
The center for software and IT Management at IIM
Bangalore, conducted this workshop on 17th Feb, 2017 at N001 Classroom in order to discuss the
opportunities and challenges in the field of AI. One of the technologies that is bound to have a
significant impact in our lifetime is perhaps Artificial Intelligence.

‘Finding your purpose in life’ with the author of ‘Leading Ladies’, (Rohini Rathour, alumna, PGP 91, R
Vaidyanathan-PGP 91) took place on 14th Feb, 2017 at the IIMB auditorium. The panel discussion
highlighted specific actions and skills needed to find purpose in life and had an interesting Q&A session
with the audience.

A meet on Union Budget took place on 1st Feb, 2017 at the IIMB auditorium. “The budget reflects the
large volume of financial resources that have been collected by the Government due to
demonetization. Hence, the liberal proposals on taxation and high capital expenditure. But this is a
routine budget and given that five states are going to polls in the next few weeks, the aim seems to
please every segment of society,” said Prof. Charan Singh on the day of Budget 2017. He also observed
that recapitalization of banks should not be automatic but follow some strict eligibility conditions.
The panelists during this meet included V K Viswanathan, Chairman, Board of Bosch Limited; S
Raghavan, L&T Finance Limited; Dr. Jacob Crasta, Founder and Chairman, CM Environsystems Pvt. Ltd.,
S. Sampathraman, Chairman and Managing Director, DPK Engineers Pvt. Ltd., and B.P. Rao, Founder
and Senior Partner, B.P. RAO & Co., Chartered Accountants.

On Demonetization – IIMB Alumni Office hosted the first


Saturday Musings session on 21st Jan, 2017 with a
discussion on demonetization. The key note speaker was
Prof.Charan Singh and the panelists were Mr. Amrit
Pandurangi, PGP ’78, Partner, Deloitte; Mr. Sharad
Sharma ex. SBM Managing Director and Mr. CVSK Rao, Sr.
Partner, Amit Ray & Co, Chartered Accountants.

3rd Annual Women Leadership Summit on 15th Jan,
2017- This was an event to promote gender equality
and also to ensure that women find their rights in terms
of education, industry and entrepreneurship. Women in
Management (WIM) at IIMB has launched a number of
initiatives to create awareness about issues faced by
women in industry and roles played by various
stakeholders in encouraging and developing women
leaders. A flagship event of the club is the Women
Leadership Summit, which witnessed multiple events, a

There were two sessions:


(i) The morning session was addressed by Neeta Revankar (CFO, Sasken Technologies) and Kaustubh
Chakraborty (Ex-Partner, McKinsey & Company) (ii) Panel discussion on ‘Priming for Success’

The afternoon session was on ‘Social Entrepreneurship’

‘Getting Started into Entrepreneurship’, a panel discussion, took place on 12th Nov, 2016 during the
grand PGPEM reunion. S. Parthasarathy, Head, Alumni Relations, IIMB, moderated the discussion.
Professor Vasanthi Srinivasan, Chairperson of Alumni Relations, IIMB, invited the alumni to engage
with the institution in a supportive way, during her interaction with the participants on the first day of
the event. Prof. Ramesh Venkateswaran, PGP ’80, Adjunct Faculty, IIMB, conducted the Masterclass on
‘Customer Experience’ on the first day of the Reunion.

CONFERENCES, SEMINARS & WORKSHOPS:

General Management for Healthcare Executives (GMHE) 2016-’17, introduced the first chapter of the ‘GMHE
Healthcare Leadership Summit’, i.e., AYUSHMAT, took place on 12th March, 2017 at the IIMB Auditorium. This
event was an opportunity for participants and executives to network and learn from each other. It was mainly
focused on bringing together the brightest and most experienced minds in the industry and academia to
discuss the challenges in the fast evolving healthcare setting.

A conference on AI, Machine Learning and Sentiment Analysis took place on 8th and 9th March, 2017
coordinated by Prof. Sankarshan Basu and Prof. Prithwiraj Mukherjee.

A seminar on “Growth Funding for Startups: Going beyond


Series A” took place on 4th March, 2017 at IIMB
Auditorium. It was hosted by NS Raghavan Centre for
Entrepreneurship Learning (NSRCEL), the incubation and
entrepreneurship hub at IIMB. The seminar included a
presentation by the research team, a panel discussion and
a Q&A session with the audience. The panel was
moderated by Prof. G. Sabarinathan, faculty from the
Finance and Accounting area at IIM Bangalore.

PGPPM Policy spoke on ‘Re-Imagining Indian and Government’ on 3rd March,2017: Padma Shri awardee Ashok
Malik, Fellow at the observer Research Foundation and India’s leading political analyst and commentator,
delivered the talk. The talk was organized by IIM Bangalore’s Post Graduate Program (PGP) in Public Policy &
Management (PGPPM). It took place on 3rd March, 2017 as part of PGPPM’s event ‘Policy Speaks’ a Public
Policy talk series.

IIMB CCGC hosted a conclave on Ecotourism on 25th Feb, 2017.


The IIMB Centre for Corporate Governance and Citizenship
along with Dharthi and the Karnataka Forest Department,
Karnataka Ecotourism Development Board, and all other
stakeholders of Ecotourism Karnataka hosted a meeting on the
Ecotourism Policy of Karnataka.

succeed only if it connects government, entrepreneurs and
citizens” said Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Rajya Sabha MP and
Founder of Jupiter Capital, during ‘Nexus 2017’, on 24th Feb, 2017 at IIM Bangalore. In his keynote address at
Nexus 2017, a public policy event hosted by students of IIMB, the Rajya Sabha MP said “regulatory capacity
and digital literacy are key in making Digital India a big success”.

Visionary Leadership Summit ‘Re-Launch India’ took place on


11th Feb, 2017 at IIMB Campus where Mr. Priyank Kharge,
Minister for IT-BT & Tourism, Government of Karnataka spoke
about Karnataka Government’s partnership with Dassault
Systems in opening a center of excellence in aerospace
management. The summit was hosted by the Post Graduate
Program in Enterprise Management (PGPEM), students of IIM
Bangalore, associated by the Centre for Software & Information
Technology Management (CSITM) of IIM Bangalore.

The biggest B-School college fest in India – IIMB


UNMAAD- took place on 29th Jan, 2017 and continued
for three days at a stretch, packed with excitement. This
fest happened to be the platform to flaunt the skills, an
arena to gape at talent in order to have loads of fun.
Unmaad drew participants across India and featured
events like dramatics, music, dance, quiz, debate, street
play, professional concerts and the grand Unmaad
fashion show among many others.

IIMBue, an Annual Leadership Summit was organized by Figure 10: The annual fest- UNMAAD was headlined by Amit

A Workshop on "Discovering Customer Needs" was held by S. Parthasarathy, Head, Alumni Relations, and IIMB
on 16th Nov, 2016. This workshop was about a framework on how to discover customer needs based on a
book written by him. This workshop helped in understanding the role of needs, values, customer decision
making criteria, framing a complete needs statement (CNS) and a complete unmet needs statement (CUNS).

Reunion of Grand PGP(S) EM Alumni Meet took place


on 12th and 13th Nov, 2016. This is an event that
brought all the PGP(S) EM batches together for an
informative and fun activities session. It was through
this event that memories were cherished and old
friends and faculty got to meet each other. Professor
Raghavan Srinivasan, Director In charge, Marketing
area, IIMB, highlighted the Institute’s achievements
and the alumni’s contributions on the initial day of the
reunion on 12th Nov, Professor Ishwar Murthy, Dean
Faculty addressed the gathering on the first day of the

Officer, IIMB, spoke on how PGPEM is considered as

UPCOMING EVENTS:

 The Alumni Association of IIM Bangalore will present the next edition of ‘Saturday Musings’ themed on
‘Disruption in the Services Sector’ on 25th March, 2017 at the IIMB auditorium. The event will include a
talk by Prof. G Shainesh, faculty from the Marketing area, IIMB, on ‘Service Innovations’. This will be
followed by a panel discussion featuring Anurag Saboo (PGP ‘96), Co-Founder, Gumption Labs, (Fintech
sector); Siva Ganapathi (PGP ‘94), COO, Idea Cellular (Telecom sector), and Dr. Charit Bhograj, Co-
Founder, Tricog, D.M. in Interventional Cardiology from Sri Ramachandra Medical College 2009
(Healthcare sector). The session will be moderated by Parag Dhol (PGP ’93), Managing Director of
Inventus Capital Partners.

 Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) and Toulouse Business School (TBS) will launch the
third edition of the Management Program on Aviation on 8th May, 2017 at the IIMB campus.

 The India Finance Conference 2017 (IFC 2017), the annual event of the Indian Finance Association (IFA),
invites papers for its seventh edition to be held at the IIMB from 20th -22nd Dec, 2017. The annual
conference is jointly organized by the IIMA, IIMB, and IIMC. Academics, researchers, doctoral students,
and practitioners are invited and encouraged to submit research papers in all areas of finance.

ACHIEVERS

Prof. Vasanthi Srinivasan from the Organizational Behavior &


Human Resources Management area (OBHRM), IIM,
Bangalore won the Distinguished Alumnus Award from her
alma mater Xavier School of Management (XLRI). She was
felicitated during the two-day celebrations of ‘Annual
Homecoming 2016’ at XLRI, held on 10th & 11th Dec, 2016
which saw around 250 alumni taking part.

Ankita Dash, a student of the Fellow Programme in Management (FPM 2013-‘18), the doctoral programme of
IIMB, won the Best Paper Award for her paper titled as- ‘To be or Not To Be in Global Value Chains-Empirical
Evidence from Indian Automotive Sector’, at the IIT KGP Management Doctoral Colloquium, held recently.

Sumit Mullick (PGPPM 2002-’04) was appointed as


Maharashtra’s new Chief Secretary.
On 28th Feb, 2017 senior IAS official Mr. Sumit Mullick was
chosen as the Chief Secretary of Maharashtra to succeed
Swadheen Kshatriya whose extended tenure ended on the
same day.

Professor S. Badrinath pursued MBA in Finance from IIMB (PGP 1980) and was appointed as the Chair
Professor of “Canara Bank Chair in Banking and Finance”.

Women’s Day celebration on 8th March, 2017 at IIMB campus: The Human Resources Department of IIM
Bangalore and the N S Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL) at IIMB together hosted a lot of
events for Women’s Day, 2017. The week-long celebrations included various competitions, games, public
speaking and sports. On 8th March, there was an exhibition and stalls were set up by women entrepreneurs at
the Central Pergola. Writer Reshma Krishnamurthy delivered a short talk on ‘Women and Motherhood’. She is
the founder of ‘Mums and Stories’. Jacintha Jayachandran, founder of NOW or Nurturing Outstanding Women,
spoke on ‘Women at Workplace’ and focused on the ways to enable women to stay in the workforce. Prof.
Dalhia Mani, from NSRCEL at IIMB and Prof. Ana Marques, Visiting Faculty at IIMB, discussed on ‘Women in
Management across Countries’. Discussions were followed by prize distribution by Prof. G. Raghuram,
Director, IIMB.

VIKASANA, the annual social impact club of IIMB hosted SAHAY on 18th Feb 2017, an annual social summit and
brought together various stakeholders in the social sectors such as NGOs, government, business, and
educational institutions – in order to discuss ‘Upskill and Upscale: Skill Development & Employment
Generation in India’.

“Make healthcare a fundamental right”: Dr.H Sudarshan Ballal – ‘Affordable healthcare- Building India’s Future
Health Economy’ was jointly organized by the Centre for Corporate Governance and Citizenship (CCGC) and The
Centre for Public Policy (CPP) at IIM Bangalore on 18th Feb, 2017 along with Sustainability Next- an E-magazine
that provides relevant content from practitioners and thought leaders.

Professor G. Raghuram took charge as Director of IIM Bangalore on 22nd Feb, 2017. He said that he would like
to reach out to all stakeholders to work towards taking the institute to greater heights. Prof. G. Raghuram has
a PhD from Northwestern University, USA, a Postgraduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) from IIM
Ahmedabad and a BTech degree from IIT Madras.

IIMB’s one year fulltime Executive Post Graduate Program (EPGP) in Management was ranked among the top
50 in the Financial Times Global MBA Ranking 2017 that was released on 30th Jan, 2017.

OBITUARIES:

We are saddened that some of our alumni passed away in the last few months. We pray for their families and
loved ones.

Jeetendra Jain, PGP 1990-1992 batch, passed away on 2nd March, 2017 due to
cardiac arrest. He is from Hyderabad and lived in Bombay. Mr. Jain was the
author of the book ‘Sack the CEO’.

He was running a marketing consultancy in Mumbai. He has written numerous


marketing literature for Business Standard, Brand Equity, A & M and Business
World.

Sudip Roy, PGP 1993-1995 batch, passed away in the US in Jan, 2017 after
battling a rare type of cancer. He worked with Amazon and stayed in Seattle.
He is survived by his wife Meenakshi and two daughters aged 14 and 8.

Dilip Iyer, PGP 1999 batch passed away on 20th Dec, 2016 after battling a
severe illness. Our heartfelt condolences to Dilip’s family for their loss.

Prof.Kalyan Guin, an alumnus from the batch FPM 1986-1994, passed away on
the 26th of Nov, 2016 in Kolkata as a result of a massive heart attack.

Pensioner Mr. Thyagarajan Babu N, Administrative Officer – Hostel and Mess, who superannuated in March
2015 passed away on 17th Feb, 2017 at 4.30 pm.

SUPERANNUATION

Professor Nayana Tara and Mr. Amarendra K -Senior Office Assistant (Technical, Estate Department) have
retired from the services of the Institute on 28th Feb, 2017 upon attaining the age of superannuation. A small
farewell function in the presence of faculty, staff and alumni was arranged for them on 28th Feb, 2017 at 4.30
pm at the lawn behind the Director’s office.

FACULTY NEWS

Dr. Rajeev Tripathi has joined IIMB on 1st Feb, 2017 as an Assistant Professor in the Production and Operations
Management Area. He has obtained his PhD from Department of Management Studies, IIT Madras. His Thesis
was on ‘Stability of Coalition Games with Externalities’.

Dr. Shibashis Mukherjee has joined IIMB on 1st Feb, 2017 as an Assistant Professor in the OB & MRM Area. Dr.
Mukherjee obtained his PhD in Sociology from Indiana University, Bloomington. His Thesis was on ‘To Hope is
to Human to Hide Divine-Role of Emotions in Negotiations with a Palliative Care Settings in the USA & India’.

 Chevening Gurukul Fellowship Program for Leadership & Excellence: It is the flagship Foreign and
Commonwealth Office Fellowship that has run for over 20 years in India. It is exclusively offered to a
group of mid-career professionals from diverse backgrounds with minimum 10 years’ experience.

Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) partners with GOI (Government of India) for ICEGOV2017
in Delhi-

 The 10th edition of the International Conference on Theory and Practice of Electronic Governance is
being hosted by Government of India and the United Nations University Operating Unit on Policy-
Driven Electronic Governance, in collaboration with UNESCO in New Delhi from 7th-9th March.

The Chief Minister’s Good Governance Associates (CMGGA) programme is opening applications for its
second year!

 The CMGGA programme is a strategic collaboration between Government of Haryana and Ashoka
University to train and facilitate the most promising young men and women of the country to work
with the State Machinery and tackle some of the complexities that face the country today. This is a 1-
year full-time work opportunity with a competitive stipend. The 2017 Cohort of Associates will begin
this exciting journey on 15th June, 2017 with an intense training period before they start their work in

There are 32 published books of alumni that have been contributed to the Alumni book shelf, out of which 10
books are fiction, 14 are nonfiction books, 2 case studies, 1 fiction graphic novel, 1 nonfiction business novel, 1
poetry, 1 nonfiction history, 1 nonfiction true story and 1 text book. We thank them for taking time out to
send their books to our office and we appreciate the efforts that have gone into writing the books.

I am Sabari Sanyal. I have obtained my Master’s Degree in Marketing Management & Communication from
Toulouse Business School, Paris, France. Before joining IIMB, I was interning with a non-profit organization,
named as EFMA in Paris after which I was working with Luxembourg School of Business in Luxembourg.
I have joined IIMB in Feb 2017 and is working with the Alumni department as a Content Developer. My role
as a content developer is to create content for websites, blogs, social Medias and other articles. I am also
responsible for developing and creating content for the monthly online release of alumni newsletter.
