COMP 552 Introduction To Cybersecurity Winter 2021: Page 1 of 3

This document discusses backup solutions and strategies for organizations. It covers the importance of backups, different backup methods like on-premises and remote backups, when each is appropriate, and the consequences of not performing backups. These include loss of revenue, damage to brand reputation, regulatory problems, and direct costs. The document also explains the difference between data archiving and backups, provides an example of an open-source backup software solution, and recommends remote backup solutions for organizations to protect against ransomware and other attacks.

COMP 552

Introduction to Cybersecurity Winter 2021

Logbook Reporting Week #: Logbook-3 Backup Solutions and strategies Date: 26/09/2021

Introduction:

The aim of the lab is to learn about solutions and strategies of backup used in any organization and its
importance with merits and demerit of using it.

Activities:

 Reviewed previous lab reports and logbook, which helped to improve our lab report and
logbook for future
 Discussed about backup strategies and its use cases
 Its merits and demerits, Circumstances of not following particular practice of backup
 Discussed about Open source backup solutions
 Difference between open-source software against a paid backup solution

Discussion:

Research on possible data backup strategies for an organization,

Mainly there are two types of backup strategies used in any organization – On-premises backup and
remote backup.
By using on-premises setup, we can make a copy of data to a hard drive, Tape, or either manually or at
specified intervals. With this practice, all the data is within your office where you can always get your
information when necessary.
And another backup strategy is remote backup which is very ideal method nowadays as computers will
send all the data automatically as per specified internals. They are more affordable, easily accessible,
have quick backup feature.

Explain when each backup strategy should be considered.

On premises backup strategies should be used in highly-regulated industries or firm such as finance,
Banks, Corporate industry and healthcare, where it is required for compliance reasons and, for many,
having data located on reachable location provides a certain peace of mind for manpower.
Cloud Base backup should be used where data is very critical where we need Automatic backups
multiple times a day, Which has an effective versioning, Secure backups - Encrypted in both manner in-
flight and at-rest, Also which can store backups outside of the environment being protected, last but not
the least, which is the most imp factor and mandatory is its Retention control – multiple or unlimited
restore points at the same time.

Provide 4 reasons why/explain how backup are important to an organization, and consequences of
not performing each.

Introduction to Cybersecurity Winter 2021
Backups help restore computers during disaster recovery and restore data after files have been
damaged or deleted. Database backups are essential to protect against data loss that can completely
disrupt business operations.
Revenue - Not backing up your organization's data can take a direct hit in your revenue stream. You will
lose products and research stored in one place, which means that you may need to either spend
valuable time recreating what you have already created or contact customers to get duplicate files from
them. This time should be spent creating new products and maintaining your revenue stream, but
instead you have to spend it backtracking.
Brand reputation - Customers won't know how to respond to a request for content you originally
created or tell them that pending content should wait while you start again from scratch. Suddenly, an
organization that has worked so hard to maintain its reputation will no longer look professional, and
customers may start looking elsewhere for more reliable services.
Regulatory Problems – Losing critical data can be a violation of federal and state regulations. This will
subject your business to re-compliance costs and additional fines for the violation. The government also
has a justifiable cause to investigate your business for any foul play, causing you to lose more valuable
time and further damage your brand reputation.
Direct Cost – Even if your data can be fully or partially recovered, this can be expensive and will be a
direct hit to your business. On top of fines and loss of revenue, your business will be paying for an
expensive recovery service that may not even recover all your data. Plus, odds are your finance and
payroll systems will go down in the process, forcing you to go through lengthy accounting records to
figure out where your business stands.

Explain the difference between data archiving and data backup, why is this important to an
organization?
The data saved in a backup is a replica of the present file and active operational information in use by an
organization. This includes documents which might be presently being accessed and changed regularly.
The files stored on an archive are usually no longer in use, not changing frequently and now not required
often. That we can store in archive.
As such, personnel will no longer be affected if those files are moved from a business’s ordinary garage.
However files saved in an archive can still be made easily reachable to person through file stubbing.

Find one open-source software solution for the platform you are currently using
Currently I am using IDrive (IDrive Inc) as online backup solution -. Which is a technology company that
specializes in cloud base data backup applications, and available to Windows, Mac, Linux, iOS and
Android users.

Create a backup and restore for at least two folders, include photograph(s)/screenshots of steps for
your software used for the open-source solution on the platform you are currently using.

Below is the software that I have used as backup solution.

What is your recommendation for a backup solution?

Nowadays I can observe that there are so many attacks which many organization are facing such as
ransomware, DDOS attach. So to avoid such a unwanted activity organization should have remote
backup solutions which are very feasible, affordable ad secure.

Conclusion:

Overall, my key take away from the lab was I have learned about different methods of backup strategies
and its solutions for any organization as it plays very fatal role to prevent their critical data as well as to
tackle unwanted situation of data loss which may impact organization.
