There are several types of Solitaire that are more popular than others. This list details the basic rules and
arrangements of the most popular forms of Solitaire.
Klondike – Also known as Patience, Klondike is the most popular form of Solitaire. Cards begin in a deck,
face down, and cascades of cards are arranged face down in ascending length from left to right. These
seven cascades end with a face-up card. By putting cards in descending numerical order and interchanged
colour (so red on black and black on red), you “free” up the face-down cards, which you then put face up
when they are at the end of the cascade. The goal of the game is to put all the cards above the cascades,
arranged by suit, from Ace to King. You pick up cards, usually three at a time, from the deck each ‘turn,’
and when you get to the bottom of the deck you start at the top again. You lose when there are no more
moves.
Freecell – Freecell works a lot like Klondike, except each card in the cascade is face-up, not face-down.
There is no deck – instead, there are four “free cells” that you can place cards in temporarily while you re-
arrange the cards below. The goal is the same as in Klondike: place all the cards, arranged by suit, from
Ace to King, above the cascades. It utilizes less chance and more skill in the completion of the
arrangement, since you can see all the cards at once.
Forty Thieves – Also known as Napoleon at St. Helena, Forty Thieves uses two decks. The initial
arrangement consists of ten piles of four cards each, face-up. The goal is to build eight foundations above
the piles from Ace to King. The process involves arranging the initial piles in descending order by suit, and
to free up the cards in the order they need to go onto the foundations. You move through the deck,
drawing one card at a time, but once you’ve drawn all the cards in the deck, the game is over. This is a
good solitaire game for those who enjoy beginning with lots of options (as there are ten piles), and lots of
cards (104 in total).
Aces Up – One of the least space-intensive solitaire games, Aces Up is great if you’re travelling or don’t
have a lot of table space. Or if you want to hide your Solitaire addiction from your concerned family. First,
deal four cards face up. Of the four, all cards but the top card of the same suit are discarded. Deal four
cards on top of the first ones and repeat the process for the bottom four cards. If an empty space emerges,
you can move a card into the space to free up the card above it. The goal is to discard all cards but the four
aces, which are the high cards in this game.
Spider Solitaire – So named because you need to build eight complete “legs” of four suits each, Spider
solitaire is one of the more challenging popular variants of Solitaire. Four columns of six cards and six
columns of five cards are dealt, all face-down except for the bottom-most card. The goal is to build “legs”
of King to Ace in each suit through the standard rules of Klondike: when a card is moved from the bottom
of a column, reveal the next card in the column. Partial legs can be moved all at once – so if you have a
three of spades on top of the four of spades, and the five of spades is revealed, you can move the four and
the three onto the five. When there are no more moves between the columns, the remaining cards in the
deck are dealt ten at a time to each of the columns. This can be challenging, because you need to move the
cards on the bottom of the partial legs before you can resume building the legs. When you build a
complete leg within a single suit from King to Ace, it is removed from play, which frees up space to
arrange and complete the remaining legs.

Solitare History
The beginnings of games using cards can be traced back to the 1300s. Italy was the first recorded country
that introduced playing cards into society. Shortly after their introduction, playing cards made their way
into Northern Europe. At that time, cards were used at competition games and people played them alone
to practice at the game they wanted to play improving their skill and creating the first solitaire games. The
first known solitaire game recorded was during the 16th century. The actual name “solitaire” has French
origins and the English translation is “patience” and in Scandinavian countries it was known as “kabala”
but by all names it is still solitaire. This actually means one person playing alone and trying to defeat the
cards.
In some instances, it is believed that the origin of the solitaire deck was Tarot cards and the end of the
game would predict the future for the person playing the cards. Although this may or may not be true,
many people enjoyed the challenge of the game and used card decks that had 2 – 10 and aces, kings,
queens, and jacks. Aces were introduced as not just the lowest card but could also be played as the highest
card in the deck and now solitaire was being played with a normal deck of cards. The game of solitaire
became even more popular after being described in a German book of games in 1783. Here it was
described in the book and became thrust of European games bringing it to the forefront of all games at
that time.
Players either took turns playing or played with separate decks trying to best the other player. Practicing
at home with a deck soon became more than just a competition practice. Players found that it could be a
relief to test their mental skills against a deck of cards in the anticipation of winning. It helped them
unwind, relax and find peace when they played solitaire.
The mid 19th century to the end of the 19th century heralded the true beginning of the solitaire
phenomenon. Prince Albert was even known to play and suddenly in the late 19th century, books began
showing up describing the solitaire game and detailing some of the ways the game was played.
It is believed that the first book on the rules of solitaire or patience games was written by Lady Adelaide
Cadogan just after the Civil War (1870). As one of the leaders of an exclusive set in England, Lady
Cadogan’s book was accepted and became the noteworthy rule book of solitaire. This made Cadogon as
familiar a reference to solitaire rules in the same way that Hoyle is the rule book for other card games.
Referring to the “Illustrated Games of Patience” was not easy to say quickly so it was later cut down to
Cadogans and it is still popular today though many books have been written to replace it.
Terms from the book Lady Cadogan’s Illustrated Games of Patience[1]. Rules as stated in the book.
• Available cards – Those that are not “blocked” by other cards, i.e., not forbidden by the particular rules
of each game, to be used.
• Released cards – Those that, by the removal of the cards that blocked them, have now become available.
• Suitable cards – Those whose value and suit fit them to be played or placed in the tableaux.
• Foundation cards – Those on which the Patience is formed. These are generally aces and kings.
• Marriage – The placing a card of the same suit on the next one above or below it in value. Any number
may be placed on each other in this way.
• Sequence – The regular succession of cards ascending from ace to king, or descending from king to ace;
a sequence need not be of one suit.
• Value – The figures of the court cards, and the number of points of the minor ones.
• Suit – Either hearts, spades, diamonds, or clubs.
• Lane – An empty space in the tableau, which has been formed by the removal of an entire row of cards.
• Talon – Cards which, being unsuitable at the moment, are laid aside in one or more packets till they can
come into use. [Note: In German books Talon refers to the stock-pile not the waste-pile as this might
suggest here.]
• To play cards – The placing them on the foundations in contradistinction to placing them elsewhere.
• Re-deals – These are always in addition to the original deal.
Over the years, it has been found that solitaire is one way of killing time but it also helps the player relax,
tone up mental acuity, prepare for diplomatic negotiations where the player needed to be in his best
mental state. Sharpening awareness and providing concentration factors were just some of the benefits of
solitaire.
Many literary authors mention solitaire in their books. Charles Dickens, Jack London, Dostoevsky and
Somerset Maugham included solitaire as their characters were waiting or trying to work out issues. Other
heads of state besides Prince Albert like Franklin D. Roosevelt and Prince Metternich were also known to
play a game during an afternoon to prepare before a conference or negotiations. Nicolo Paganini, beloved
musician, cherished his time playing solitaire which helped him prepare for his concerts.
Spider solitaire ( solitaire or patience ) is a well-known solitaire game, which has gained a lot in popularity since Microsoft have started shipping it free
with windows. It is very hard though, and many people want to know how they can increase their chances of winning.
There is hundreds versions of Solitaire like : Spider Solitaire (most popular),Crescent Solitaire,Klondike Solitaire,FreeCell,TriPeaks Solitaire,Pyramid
Solitaire and many others. Here you can play "Spider Solitaire One Suit","Spider Solitaire Two Suits" and" Spider Solitaire Four Suits".
The aim of spider solitaire is to build an ascending suit sequence in the foundation zone. But this is easier said than done! Particularly when playing 4
suit spider, it can sometimes seem nearly impossible to finish the game.
But there are strategies you can use to dramatically increase your chances of winning. But before I go into that, a quick note. In this article, I assume
you have a solitaire game that allows multi-undo, and that you don't mind using it. Some people don't have a solitaire program that supports multi-
level undo, or feel that using undo is somehow "cheating". These people can still get something out of this article, but not everything they read may
apply.
The first objective of spider solitaire is to get a vacant column. The objective after that is to try and get another vacant column. Once you have 2
vacant columns, the game starts to become winnable, but if you can, try and form yet another empty column. Once you get to 3 or 4 empty columns,
you have a very good chance of winning, unless you get an extremely unlucky run of cards.
Getting The First Empty Column... The first move you should make in the game is whatever the highest rank card that can play is. If given a choice,
play from the stacks on the right hand side, as the 6 right hand stacks start with one less card.
If a stack is closer to other stacks to being complete, play that card (if you can) If you can't play from the stack which is closest to being emptied, than
play the card with the highest rank. If 2 or more cards have the same high rank, and one of them can be played into a same suit sequence, then play
that one.
Keep playing like this, until a column is emptied, or you run out of moves.
Once a column has been emptied, the focus of the game changes a little. There are now 3 main objectives, "cleanup", "re-arrange", and "expose". An
overriding principal at this time is to try and keep the empty columns. Vacant columns give you a lot more choices in the game, and whenever
possible, you only want to fill your empty columns temporarily.
CLEANING UP
The first objective for the second phase of the game is "cleanup". This is my term for re-arranging columns so that they become same-suit sequences.
For example, suppose you had 2 columns. The first one has:
7 Diamonds
The game
The main purpose of the game is to remove all cards from the table, assembling them in the tableau before removing them. Initially,
54 cards are dealt to the tableau in ten piles, face down except for the top cards. The tableau piles build down by rank, and in-suit
sequences can be moved together. The 50 remaining cards can be dealt to the tableau ten at a time when none of the piles are
empty.
There are several variants of spider, such as Relaxed Spider or Spiderette. The former doesn't require all spaces to be filled
before redealing, while the latter is played with only one deck.
There are also three deck (Spiderwort) and four deck (Gigantic Spider) variants of Spider Solitaire.
he most common software version of Spider is the one included in the Vista, ME and XP versions of Microsoft Windows, Spider
Solitaire.[citation needed]Spider Solitaire was introduced in the Microsoft Plus! 98 addition pack for Windows 98.[1]
Another Windows version of Spider is Arachnid Solitaire. Arachnid is an extremely tricky game to complete successfully because a
suit must be entirely completed before it is moved off the array, and there is not a lot of room to maneuver. Additional points are
gained for keeping completed suits in play until all eight are complete. To make things easier for the novice player, the game offers
an unlimited 'cheat mode' where moves can be undone right back to the beginning of the game, a partial cheat mode where moves
can only be undone to the last deal, and a 'cheat-proof' mode where if you attempt to undo more than one move it changes the
screen colour from green to purple and confiscates half your score.
On Unix operating systems, an early version was developed around 1989 at Sun Micronutrient. A version of Spider Solitaire comes
bundled with KDE for Linux. It has been a part of kdegames for some time. Versions for Macintosh and most other operating
The Windows version offers three levels of difficulty, with one, two, or four suits. These play modes are equivalent to disregarding
suit difference, either within the colors or altogether, and thus can be simulated in the physical card game, though the computer
It is very easy to get blocked in Spider. You can get blocked when you build out of suit, or
when cards get dealt from the stock onto a sequence. Therefore it is critical to build in
suit as much as possible. Empty tableau piles (spaces) are extremely valuable and can be
used to help moves cards around, but you must fill all spaces before dealing from the
tableau.
The average player wins Spider about 10% of the time. A good player can win about 33%
of the time and a really good player can score 50%. But it appears that a really excellent
player who makes extensive use of undo can score nearly 100%. It is possible that nearly
every Spider game is winnable and that Spider may be nearly completely a game of skill.
With the release of Windows ME, Spider became the 3rd solitaire game to be included
with Windows (joiningKlondike and FreeCell). This has greatly increased Spider's
popularity. Because Spider is so difficult, the Windows ME program adds two easier levels
of play, which are called One Suit and Two Suit. One Suit makes Spider easier by making
all the cards of same suit, changing the game so that moving groups no longer depends on
suit. As a solitaire purist, I find this changing of a deck of cards into just one suit
somewhat blasphemous, but it is essentially the same idea as the Spider variant game
Black Widow (in Pretty Good Solitaire and Spider Wizard).
Black Widow is the same as Spider except groups of cards can be moved regardless of suit.
This makes the game much easier. Two Suit is the same idea except there are two suits
instead of one, meaning cards can be moved regardless of color. Black Widow is included in
both Pretty Good Solitaire and Spider Wizard. Another related game is Tarantula, or Two Suit.
This game is the same as Spider except groups of cards can be moved if they are in
descending sequence of the same color. About Spider
Spider is a classic 2 deck game that is among the most popular of solitaire games.
In our poll last year, Spider was the 7th most popular game among users of Pretty
Good Solitaire. It is a difficult game of skill. There are 10 tableau piles and while the
piles can be built down regardless of suit, only groups of cards built down by suit
can be moved together. Spider differs from most solitaire games in that there are
no foundation piles. When a group of 13 cards in descending sequence down by suit
are grouped together, they are removed from play. The object is to remove all the
cards from play. The cards that are not dealt out at the start are held in the stock.
When there are no more moves in the tableau, one card is dealt to each tableau
pile from the stock.
It is very easy to get blocked in Spider. You can get blocked when you build out of
suit, or when cards get dealt from the stock onto a sequence. Therefore it is critical
to build in suit as much as possible. Empty tableau piles (spaces) are extremely

before dealing from the tableau.
The average player wins Spider about 10% of the time. A good player can win
about 33% of the time and it appears that the best possible score is somewhere
around 50%.
With the release of Windows ME, Spider became the 3rd solitaire game to be

Spider's popularity. Because Spider is so difficult, the Windows ME program adds
two easier levels of play, which are called One Suit and Two Suit. One Suit makes

cards can be moved regardless of suit. This makes the game much easier. Two Suit
is the same idea except there are two suits instead of one, meaning cards can be
moved regardless of color. This game can be created in Pretty Good Solitaire using
the wizard and is included in Spider Wizard.
Spider Tips
Spider allows you to build down regardless of suit, but you can only move cards in
groups by suit. Therefore, you should prefer building in suit when possible and only
build out of suit when necessary. When building out of suit, prefer to build high
ranked cards.
Empty spaces are very valuable. Don't fill empty spaces just because you can (such
as with Kings). Use empty spaces to free blocked cards. Of course, before dealing
another row of cards you have to fill spaces.
A newer addiction is the addiction to the computer. People can spend hours surfing the web,
or playing the latest computer games.
But the biggest addiction seems to be to Spider Solitaire. It's so readily available. It comes
for free with every Window's installation. It takes just a few minutes to learn. You start with
just one suite. Quickly move up to two suites. And then begins the challenge... Four Suites!
That's when the addiction comes. The game allows you to backtrack as many moves as you
want -- even all the way to the beginning of the game. You can spend hours just retrying
the same game but when that game ends, whether win or lose, you'll quickly press "new
game" and start all over.
I have done a little research onto how the game has affected people's lives. Answers I have
received:
The Solution
Spider Solitaire
Like most other solitaire games, the goal of Spider Solitaire is to remove all
the cards from the "tableau" by forming "runs" or sets of cards in a specific
order.
Another reason for the popularity of Spider Solitaire is the player's ability to
change the game's difficulty by changing the rules. Open ended games are
always more fun and offer a more challenging pursuit for the player.
Once you've decided what difficulty level you want to play at, gathered your
cards, and built the initial tableau, you should start building runs. The runs in
Spider Solitaire move downward from King to Ace (Kings high, Aces low).
Because there are 104 cards and the runs are made up of thirteen cards,
there will naturally be eight "foundations" where you place the runs when
you've completed them. The game is won when you've built all eight
foundations running from King down through Ace.
All foundation building really happens in the tableau itself, similar to traditional
solitaire -- this means that the eight "foundation spots" won't really be a big
part of the game until you're ready to drop a run into its home. Once a card is
"exposed" (meaning it is face up) you can move it from the end of a tableau
into another game space if and only if this move forms part of a run.
Remember that runs in Spider Solitaire are in descending order, so you can
play a two on a three, or a Jack on a Queen, etc.
Spider Solitaire players are also allowed to move particular run as a unit onto
another tableau column -- but only if the two runs are of the same suit. This is
why to make the game of Spider Solitaire easier, all it takes is limiting the
number of suits in play.
Just to make the game even more infuriating, you are required to fill an empty
spot in the tableau before you deal out of the stock -- often this means
breaking up a run in progress just to move forward.
Spider Solitaire may have exploded in popularity after its inclusion in a version
of Microsoft's Windows operating system, but you don't have to be running
Windows to play. Stock up on additional decks of cards and try out this very
adaptable game of Solitaire today.
Solitaire Addiction
Solitaire is readily available, free, and requires nothing to work outside of your
computer (or just a plain deck of cards). But because solitaire is most often
played on a computer, people who are susceptible to computer, Internet, or
gaming addiction are also susceptible to solitaire addiction. The "experts" tell
us that many of the symptoms of solitaire addiction are held in common with
those other kinds of electronic habits. Here's a shortlist of solitaire addiction
signs you can use to make sure you or someone you love isn't becoming a
solitaire addict:
There are also a handful of physical signs that solitaire addiction could be
present. These include the onset of carpal tunnel syndrome, dry bleary eyes
from staring at the computer screen, recurring headaches and back pain,
trouble eating, and ignoring personal hygiene.
What can you do for a person who you believe has solitaire addiction? Many
people with these kinds of addictions require cognitive behavioral therapy
(CBT) in order to overcome their addiciton. Cognitive behavioral therapy
teaches addicts to identify a problem in their life and then find the tools to
solve it. CBT is becoming increasingly popular for a wide range of addictions,
not just gaming or Internet addiction. Harvard Medical School's McLean
Hospital has one of the first computer gaming addiction treatment centers in
the world, and offers serious help for people seriously impacted by solitaire or
other gaming addiction.

More and more video games are being developed everyday. Most of them all you have to do
are just press buttons and no much thinking is required. They are actually believed to
reduce someone IQ's. With this happening it does not mean that you stop playing computer
games. You can get those ones that are healthy to you. Those that you not only required to
press a button just to have fun but you are also required to think about it and come up with
a strategy.
These are really helpful to children as they teach them to start thinking and strategizing in a
small age. One of this games that have a positive effect to your brain is computer card
game. This defiantly requires you to have a computer. Finding them in the internet is not
really hard; all you have to do is just type in the name and a list of site that have this will
appear. Select the site you like and you can now play solitaire online.
Most of these sites have free games and you will not be required to pay anything in order to
enjoy them. You do not even have to sign in or get an account of the site, all you have to do
is choose the type you want and wait until it loads and just have fun.
There are of different types that you can choose from. There is the free cell, the spider,
Klondike, pyramid, aces up, demon and golf solitaire just to mention a few. All of them have
different ways to go about with them. Same of them are quite simple but others require you
to be very careful with the moves you make. Like for example in pyramid you need to know
all the cards that's you can move because if you do not finish all the cards then it will be
over. These cards also improve your calculation speed as you are required to think and add
numbers in a short time.
When you play solitaire online you save a lot of money that you would have spent in buying
or downloading them to you computer. It also gives you an option of choosing from the
many different types when you are playing solitaire online.

played by a single person.
To play Solitaire first of all the cards that are to be dealt with are shuffled well. They are
arranged and spread well on a table top as per specific rule of the game. The deck of all
playing cards is arranged by suit and rank under limitations, through various moves. All
forms of these games involve reshuffling of cards. This card game has many words in its
terminology. It has been divided into many varieties like Pyramid Solitaire, Golf Solitaire,
Klondike Solitaire and FreeCell Solitaire. These games have been further modified into
multiplayer versions. Online card games are also available at Las Vegas but the rules of
playing these games are different. They involve playing money bets.
Users who play Solitaire should have a high level of skill to understand the complexity of the
game. It should be played with one or more than one deck of cards. The rules of playing
may vary in different versions. Now days Solitaire is being enjoyed as an online computer
game. Many of its versions can be installed with basic windows. You will be amazed and

card playing versions can be downloaded free from the internet. Many games of Solitaire
have been named after world famous ruler Napoleon Bonaparte like, for example Napoleon's
square. All games have a comfortable operative interface. With functions like single click,
double click with drop and drag facility. Microsoft Operating Systems are providing these
games free of cost on purchase of new computers.
Solitaire is a card game that originated in Australia. In the US, it is known as 'Solitaire' and
in British English it is referred to as 'Patience.' This card game has over 54 variations. There
are multiplayer solitaire card games too.
It is a game generally played with a deck of 52 cards. Solitaire games involve dealing cards
from a shuffled deck in a methodical arrangement on a table. A player tries to re-order the
deck by suit and rank through a series of moves, transferring cards from one place to
another. There are prescribed restrictions that have to be followed. All the cards of a certain
rank form the guidelines on which the suits are built. The moves proceed until the game is
won or a further move is impossible. This is known as making or breaking the game. Some
games allow re-shuffling of the deck or the placement of cards in a new or empty location.
Solitaire has its own terminology. There are many types of solitaire games, but the term
solitaire is often used to refer to the most well known form called 'Klondike.' The other types
of solitaire have been adapted into two-player competitive games. As mentioned earlier,
solitaire has many variations using either one or more deck of cards with rules of varying
complexity and skill level. Many of these have been converted in to electronic games and
are available on computers. There are about 150 solitaire card games that have been
devised.
The term solitaire is used for single-player games of dexterity and the ability to play the
game. The games use a set of layout of tiles, pegs and stones, instead of cards. This card
game is played all over the world and enjoyed by people of all ages.
Are you feeling bored? Well, if you are someone who loves playing card games you can get
rid of your boredom by playing an online Solitaire card game. Solitaire, also referred to as
patience, is a card game that has a goal of sorting out the cards in specific order. Solitaire is
basically meant for single player but while playing solitaire online you can compete with
more than one player. Some of the benefits of online solitaire over the traditional card game
are as follows:
You Don't Need To Rely On Your Family or Friends
In this busy life it's not possible for everyone to set an evening aside to play card with your
family or your friends. If you are facing the same situation, online solitaire might be the
solution for you. Unlike the traditional card game, while playing solitaire you don't need to
call your friends and arrange the time and place to play.
If you're bored of playing alone, you can challenge other players as well. On some of the
sites you can text chat with others players and have fun with them.
Unlike the traditional cards game, solitaire provides more user interactivity. For example
you can customize the deck, background with different themes available. You can enable
and disable the sound as well.
Help Feature
There is no need to panic if you stuck in between. With the Hint feature you can play the
game more efficiently.
The best thing about playing online solitaire is that, it doesn't require a commitment and
