Scientific Notation and Scientific Figures

I. Instruction: Write the following numbers in scientific notation.

1.) 0.000000672= 6.72x10-7

2.) 4 000 000 000 000= 4.0x1012
3.) 0.0000050= 5.0x10-6
4.) Multiply 9 x 1018 and 3.2 x 10-6= (9x1018)(3.2x10-6)
= (9)(3.2)x1018+(-6)
= 28.8x1012

5.) Divide 700,000,000 by 0.00035= 7.0x10 8/3.5x10-4

= 7.0/3.5x108-(-4)
= 2x1012

6.) Calculate the value of (8.6 x 104) (25,000) / (300) (0.000015)

=(8.6 x 104) (2.5x104) / (3x102) (1.5x10-5)
=(8.6)(2.5)x104+4/(3)(1.5)x102+(-5)
=
21.5x108/4.5x10-3
= 4.8x1011

7.) 7.934 x 109= 7934000000

8.) 4.83 x 10-7= 0.000000483
9.) 601000000000000= 6.01x1014
10.) 0. 00000000000002061= 2.1x10-14

II. Instruction: Identify the number of significant figures in each of the following
numbers.
1.) 7639000000 = 10
2.) 0.0000065= 2
3.) 8.10000= 6
4.) 3.0 x 108= 5
5.) 54000000= 4
6.) 0.000080061= 5
7.) 7.341 x 10 -12= 4
8.) 101000000000= 12
9.) 9.0000000= 8
10.) 60000001= 8
