SECTION 1.0 OPERATION AND INSTALLATION

1.2 Principle of Operation

1.3 Installation
Refer to Figure 6-1 in Section 6 and Figures 1-5
through 1-8 while following this procedure. OPEN

1.3.1 Preparation
1. Close the actuator. Refer to Figure 1-5.
2. Remove the two crank retainer lock nuts (item CLOSE
25), lock washers (item 26), and the crank re-
tainer (item 16) from the actuator assembly. Re-
move the crank shafts.

3. Back out the two locating pins (item 24) far enough
so as not to obstruct the inner bore of the actuator. Figure 1-5. Actuator crank in Close position.

4. Close the Kellyguard™. Refer to Figure 1-6.

1.3.3 Actuator Installation


1. Orient actuator (tie rod nuts up) to the Kellyguard™.
Note the rotation of the Kellyguard™ and actuator CLOSE
cranks. The witness marks on the ends of the
cranks of both the Kellyguard™ and the actuator
should be pointing in the same direction. If they
are not, rotate the actuator 180 degrees relative to

1.4 Removal
Refer to Figure 6-1 in Section 6 while following this
procedure. Also refer to Figures 1-7 and 1-8.

1.4.1 Actuator Removal


1. Turn off the air supply and bleed the air pressure Tie-Back

4.2 Assembly

4.2.2 Cleaning and Inspection


Ensure that working surfaces are free of burrs, rough
edges, or other defects. Remove minor pits and Bearings

scores in the field with emery cloth. Coat repaired

that has severe pits or damage. Inspect all seals and
replace any seals that are worn, damaged, or in use

4.2.3 Lubrication Outer Seals


1. Lubricate all internal surfaces, external surfaces,
sealing surfaces, and seals with a Teflon® base Inner Seals
grease upon assembly.
2. Lubricate capscrew threads requiring torque with

4.2.4 Assembly Procedure Link


1. Install the inner seal (item 9/4) and the outer seal

seal grooves in the inside diameter of the piston
(item 1). Install the piston outer seals (item 9/8)
into the seal grooves in the outside diameter.
Refer to Figure 4-3 for seal orientation.
3. Press two bearings (item 21) into each of the two
links (item 8).
4. Install the links into the two slots in the piston by
inserting dowel pins (item 13) through the body of Piston

5. Install the crank arms, one on each side, onto the


links by inserting a dowel pin (item 13). Allow the
crank arms to rest on the piston for now as shown Tie Rod

6. Install tie rod bearing (item 20), T-seal (item 9/6),
and retaining ring (item 17) into each tie rod bore Bearing

7. Position the lower cap so that it is face up. Piston

12. Install the outer crank seals (item 9/3) into the
groove in each crank opening in the outer cylinder
(item 3). Refer also to Figure 4-8.

13. Install the inner cylinder (item 2) through the


piston and onto the lower cap (item 4) so that the
dowel pin in the cylinder aligns with the dowel pin
locating groove in the cap. Push the cylinder
down until the dowel pin is engaged fully. Refer
also to Figure 4-9.

14. Install the outer cylinder (item 3) over the piston


and onto the lower cap so that the groove in the
outer cylinder mates with the orienting key slot.
15. Inspect the inner and outer cylinders to ensure
that the crank openings and the locating pin Outer Cylinder

16. Install the orienting key (item 10) onto the lower
cap using the button-head screw (item 11). Refer
also to Figure 4-10.

17. Install the locating pin seals (items 9/9, 9/10, and
9/11) onto each locating pin (item 24). Refer also

19. Hold the crank shaft (item 6) with the male hex
facing the crank opening in the outer cylinder.

Install the nuts onto the tie rods (item 14) and
tighten the nuts using 320 lb-ft (36 N•m) torque.
25. Install the orienting key (item 10) and the button
head screw (item 11) into the upper cap. The key
should mate with a slot in the outer cylinder.
26. Manually function the actuator with a 7/8" hex key
wrench in the female hex in the crank (item 6)
several times. NOTE: It may be necessary to use
two wrenches.

SECTION 5.0 TROUBLESHOOTING

Problem Probable Cause

1. Actuator fails to operate in either direction. Inadequate air supply to actuator.

Actuator installed on IBOP 180o out of proper


orientation.

Crank arms or keys are not engaged with crank


shafts.

Links and crank arms are not oriented correctly


inside actuator.

2. Actuator opens but only closes half way. Crank shaft is not installed through at least one
crank arm.

3. Motion is erratic or slow. Exhaust on opposing chamber is restricted.
