3 Using the Template

The 7SJ512 overcurrent protection test template is divided into three object groups: test object, hardware
configuration and the list of OMICRON test modules used for testing the relay's protection functions. The
template can be used for testing the following protection functions:
• Directional and non-directional overcurrent (50, 50N, 51, 51N, 67, 67N)
• Thermal overload (49)
• Sensitive ground fault (64)
• CB auxiliary contacts

3.1 Test Object

The test object already contains the Siemens 7SJ512 XRIO converter which includes all setting
parameters of the modeled 7SJ512 protection functions. The setting parameters are built as an image of
the DIGSI software. For more information, see the Siemens 7SJ512 V3.2 XRIO converter user manual.

3.2 Hardware Configuration

The hardware configuration offers various configuration options for voltage and current outputs. For
testing the 7SJ512 relay with the 7SJ512 overcurrent protection test template, the standard configuration
as shown in the following figure is required.

Figure 2: Configuration of the voltage and current outputs

Note: If higher currents are needed for testing (e.g. relays with Inom = 5 A), the current output
configuration can be adapted (e.g. by setting to 3 x 25 A).
In the Analog Outputs dialog box, the voltage and current outputs have to be routed to the name
variables. The figure 3 shows the Analog Outputs configuration.

5 Functional Range
The test modules are grouped according to the tested protection function. The 7SJ512 overcurrent
protection test template includes OMICRON test modules for the following protection functions:
• Pick-up and drop-off of:
Definite time overcurrent protection (50), (50N)
Inverse time overcurrent protection (51), (51N)
Directional definite and inverse time overcurrent protection (67), (67N)
• Trip time of:
Definite time overcurrent protection (50), (50N)
Inverse time overcurrent protection (51), (51N)
Directional definite and inverse time overcurrent protection (67), (67N)
• Directional element
• Thermal overload trip time and thermal overload warning signal (49)
• Pick-up and trip time of the unbalanced load protection function (46)
• Sensitive ground fault (64)
• Trip time with circuit breaker contacts

The test modules are activated automatically when the template is loaded. If a protection function is
deactivated in the test object, the corresponding test modules are deactivated automatically. Once a test
module has been deactivated, it will not be activated automatically, even if the corresponding protection
function is reactivated. In this case, activate the protection function manually or reset the template to the
initial state (all modules activated) as follows: On the Test menu, point to User Command, and then click
CheckAllModules.

Note: Test modules will only be unchecked after the test object or the hardware configuration has been
opened during a test.

6 Not Supported Functions

The following functions of the 7SJ512 relay are not supported by the 7SJ512 overcurrent protection test
template:
• Switch on to fault
• Auto-reclosure protection (79)
• Intermittent ground fault protection

Some of the protection functions listed above which cannot be tested with the 7SJ512 overcurrent
protection test template. The 7SJ512 overcurrent protection test template can be extended by the user to
allow testing the protection functions currently not supported. It is possible to add any test module to the
existing templates. The additional test modules will not affect the template, but they will not be activated or
deactivated automatically.

7 OMICRON Test Strategy

The 7SJ512 overcurrent protection test template includes the pick-up and trip time value tests which are
performed in a standardized way. For the pick-up and drop-off value test, the setting value is evaluated by
a ramp increasing the variable under test until the pick-up value is reached. The test of drop-off values is
done in a similar way by decreasing the tested value until the drop-off value is reached.
Trip times are tested by simulating a fault which exceeds the pick-up value and the specific tolerances.
This results in a trip command of the tested protection function. The time between the simulation of the
fault and the reception of the trip signal is measured and evaluated.

Note: Do not only rely on the automatic assessment of test points in the test modules. Check the
plausibility of all test results manually to gain maximum security that all test results are reliable.

8.1 Wiring Test

The wiring test is used to check the connections between the CMC test set and the relay. Therefore the
OMICRON QuickCMC test module is used to inject asymmetrical voltage and current values. The first
phase of the voltages is set to 95%, the second phase to 105% and the third phase to 100% of the
nominal value. The first phase of the currents is set to 95%, the second phase to 100% and the third
phase to 105%. If all connections are correct, the same values can be read out of the relay and the test
can be manually assessed.

8.2 Initial Test

The initial test is used to check the connections between the CMC test set and the relay. If all connections
are correct, the test will pass, otherwise the test will fail. The OMICRON Overcurrent test module is used
for the initial test. A three-phase fault is simulated with twice the pick-up current for the first directional
overcurrent stage in the forward direction.

Note: If all directional overcurrent stages are deactivated or if the first directional overcurrent stage is
directed reverse, you must adapt the test manually.

8.3 Pick-up and Drop-off of Non-directional and Directional Overcurrent

For testing the pick-up and drop-off values, the OMICRON Ramping test module is used. This module
allows testing the pick-up and drop-off of the overcurrent stage with the lowest pick-up value. There are
three test modules, each covering the pick-up and drop-off of the overcurrent stage with the lowest pick-
up value. The following fault types are tested:
• Fault type A-N
• Fault type B-C
• Fault type A-B-C

8.4 Trip Time of IDMT and DMT Overcurrent Stages

For testing the trip time of the IDMT and DMT overcurrent stages, the OMICRON Overcurrent test module
is used. The test is divided into two blocks, one covering all forward overcurrent stages, the other covering
all reverse stages. Every fault loop is tested with a separate overcurrent module for each direction. The
trip times of the following fault types are tested in the forward direction:
• Fault type C-N
• Fault type A-B
• Fault type A-B-C

In the reverse direction, the following fault types are tested:

• Fault type A-N
• Fault type B-C
• Fault type A-B-C

If the directional and the non-directional overcurrent stages are active simultaneously, the non-directional
overcurrent stages are visible in both the directional and non-directional test modules. The test shots for
each fault type are set relative to the pick-up setting values.

8.5 Directional Minimum and Maximum Angles

The directional minimum and maximum angles are tested with the OMICRON Ramping test module. The
directional angle is tested with two ramp states per test module. The first ramp state tests the maximum
directional angle and the second module tests the minimum directional angle. The maximum torque angle
(MTA) is calculated from the maximum and the minimum directional angles but is not evaluated by the
test module. The directional angles are tested for the following fault loops:
• Directional test A-N
• Directional test B-C
• Directional test A-B-C

Note: The template is only applicable to relay testing with the firmware 3.2 and 1.0. Other firmware
versions may lead to malfunctions of some test modules, especially the directional element tests.

8.6 Thermal Overload Trip Time and Thermal Overload Warning Signal
The thermal overload function of the relay is tested with two OMICRON StateSequencer test modules by
simulating a three-phase fault. The test shot for the trip test is set to 1.15 × IN.
The thermal overload warning is tested with a second OMICRON StateSequencer test module
implementing the same test shot as the module used for the trip test. The only difference is the monitored
binary input. While the trip signal is monitored in the trip test, the warning input serves as a trigger in the
test of the thermal overload warning. The memory of the relay's thermal overload model has to be reset
prior to the second test. For more information, see the relay manual.

Note: The thermal overload warning can only be tested if the warning signal of the thermal overload
function is routed to one of the relay's outputs.
Note: The StateSequencer Module has a max. test time of 838s. Thus if the time point for the thermal
overload warning stage or the thermal overload trip time stage Tnom is bigger than 838s, please change
the load current in the xRio-Converter. The parameter for the load current can be found in the XRIO-
Converter under Additional Parameters – Relay Information – 49 Thermal Overload.

8.7 Sensitive Ground Fault

The sensitive ground fault is tested with the OMICRON State Sequencer test modules. The test is divided
into two different parts– 50Ns/51Ns and 67Ns. Each consists of two test modules. The first module is
used to test Ue> at T Ue>, the second one to test T IEE>.
Each test is a sequence of faults which cause the relay to trip or to block the trip command. The used
sequences are:
• Fault with 0.8 x Ue> or/and 0.8 x IEE> - no trip in both cases
• Fault with 1.2 x Ue> or/and 1.2 x IEE> - trip in both cases

In both cases the trip times are evaluated. When no trip is expected, the state time is measured.

Note: The xRio Converter does not allow for the case: TUE (DIGSI 3012) > TIEE (3018) or TIEEp (3020).
Thus check, if the parameter is set to a higher time period than TIEE> or TIEEp. Be careful using inverse
characteristics. In this case the max. trip time TIEEp of the special test point has to be calculated before
checking TUE.

8.8 Trip Time with Circuit Breaker Contacts

For testing the trip time with circuit breaker contacts test, the OMICRON State Sequencer test module
is used. This test is divided into three sequencer states: pre-fault, fault and post-fault. The fault is a three-
pole fault in the direction of the first directional overcurrent stage. If all directional overcurrent stages are
deactivated, the fault is generated in the first non-directional overcurrent stage. The time between the trip
command and the time when the circuit breaker is opened is evaluated.
