1. General
This user manual describes details of testing Mitsubishi MRD-HA relays with the OMICRON
Protection Test Template. General information about the usage of OMICRON Protection Testing Library
items can be found in the OMICRON PTL user manual.

The template has been tested with the following relay:

Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Electric
Model: MRD-HA
Firmware Versions:
BOOT-M: PGHJ0308
MM-CPU: PGKH91
BOOT-R: PGHJ0408
MR-CPU: PGKH92

2. Software and Hardware Requirements

To use this template, you must have a valid test license for the OMICRON Test Universe 3.20 software or
higher versions and the following test modules:
• Control Center
• Quick CMC
• Ramping
• Pulse Ramping
• Advanced Differential
• State Sequencer

Any CMC test set providing six current outputs can be used with this Protection Test Template.

3. Hardware
There are multiple possibilities of connecting a MRD-HA relay to a CMC test set. The advised connections
are shown in Figure 1 to Figure 3. These connections are the default settings in the
Hardware Configuration of the PTT.

The connections for testing LV1 and LV2 REF functions are similar to the connections shown in Figure 3.
They are shown in full detail in the test template.

4. Functional Range
Supported functions:
• DIFTH Transformer Differential protection
• OC1, OC2, OC3 Phase Overcurrent protection for all CT inputs
• OC1G, OC2G, OC3G Ground Overcurrent protection for all CT inputs
• V/Hz protection
• THOL Thermal Overload protection for all CT inputs
• REF Restricted Earth Fault protection for HV, LV1 and LV2 windings

Not supported functions:

• DIF Differential protection
• REFAT Restricted Earth Fault for Autotransformer

Although the functions listed above are not supported by the Protection Test Template, the
Relay Parameter Section of the XRIO Converter includes all protection parameters of the relay.

5. XRIO Converter
The Test Object already contains the Mitsubishi MRD-HA XRIO Converter, which includes setting
parameters of the modelled protection relay. The setting parameters are built as an image of the M32CA
software.

You can use the Filter for Mitsubishi MRD/MDT to import relay settings into the Test Object

5.1 Order Options Block

Nominal frequency, secondary nominal currents and secondary nominal voltages are order options.
These parameters have to be set in the Order Options block for correct operation of the PTT.

5.2 Transformer Settings Block

The Advanced Differential test modules used in the PTT needs additional transformer data, which is not
included in the relay settings, for the correct calculation of test currents. For correct calculation of the test
currents in the Advanced Differential test module, the following transformer data have to be entered
manually:
• Nominal Power of the protected transformer
• Nominal voltages of LV1 and LV2 windings
• Grounding of HV, LV1 and LV2 windings

6. Specific Protection Tests

6.1 Differential Tripping Characteristic tests

The Differential Tripping Characteristic tests are limited to A-B-C faults in case of Wye-Wye transformer
setups. As soon as any Delta winding transformer is tested, all fault types are available for testing.

6.2 V/Hz Protection tests

6.2.1 Pickup tests

The VF1 to VF8 pickup values are tested with Pulse Ramping test modules. The voltage is increased by
steps starting slightly below the VF1 to a value exceeding the VF8 pickup value, while the frequency is
kept constant. The voltage rise is kept constant for a time longer than the set trip time and drops back to
the nominal voltage after each test step. The voltage of the test step which triggers a V/Hz trip is
measured and evaluated.

6.2.2 Trip Time tests

The VF1-T to VF8-T trip times are tested with State Sequencer test modules. Each test starts with a pre-
fault state, injecting nominal voltage and frequency for one second. The second state is a fault state with a
voltage exceeding the V/Hz pickup at nominal frequency for a time greater than the set trip time of each
V/Hz stage. The fault state is stopped by the relay trip and followed by a post fault state, where nominal
voltage and frequency are injected into the relay. The trip time is measured and gets evaluated against its
nominal value.

6.3 REF tests

The Restricted Earth Fault Tests use Advanced Differential test modules with modified wiring and setup to
test the REF1, REF2 and REF3 functions.

6.3.1 Operating Characteristic and Trip Time Characteristic tests

The wiring of the relay has to be set up individually for each REF function. For REF1 testing, current
output A of the CMC is connected to the HV winding CT inputs of the relay in the same way, as it would
be connected for differential protection testing. Current output B is connected to the single I10 current
input of the relay, where all three currents of the CMC are connected in parallel, which enables the
switching of fault types in the REF tests without additional changes of the test connections. See Figure 3
for a schematic view of the connection.
The Advanced Differential test modules are configured automatically. The Advanced Differential test
object is set to “Generator” and Winding 1 of the Advanced Differential test object contains the HV, LV1 or
LV2 winding data of the relay, depending on the tested REF function. Winding 2 of the
Advanced Differential test object is set up to match the starpoint input of the REF function. The operating
characteristic is tested by using the Diff Operating Characteristic test module. The REF operating
characteristic is tested with A-N, B-N and C-N faults, two-phase and three-phase faults will not work.
The trip time characteristic of the REF function is tested by using the Diff Trip Time Characteristic test
module, using A-N, B-N and C-N faults to verify the REF trip time.
