Demon Hunter
Original design by: Kyle Power
Reformatted as a prestige class by: Viktor Asago
Long ago a group of elves swore a pact to guard the world against chaos. To do
this they decided to wield the power of the evil they fight. Using the magic of demons
they devote their lives to the hunting and killing of the forces of the dark gods. They
usually blind themselves (at the beginning of their training with weapons) so they can see
demons and undead with special clarity.
Characteristics: Demon hunters are proficient with only one weapon, the warblade. The
warblade is a demonically charged blade that curves into a crescent moon shape and this
extraordinary five-foot blade is held in the middle. The demon hunter uses two of these
monstrous weapons with no penalty due to their years of training with them.
Alignment/Religion: Demon hunters can be of almost any alignment, but they cannot be
evil because of their ambitious goal of destroying evil. They worship their own goddess,
Elune, the goddess of the secret order of hunters.
Background: If a child shows an interest in demonic magic early in their life they are
brought before an elder demon hunter and taught the basics. The elves that are taught
return to their previous clans as new and more powerful fighters, noted by scars, usually a
blindfold, and the warblades. Their past identity is removed from them and they forget
everything, parents, friends, and all others. Sometimes a demon hunter in training is sent
on a daring journey by their master in order to learn what they have to by themselves. By
the time the demon hunter prestige class is taken the demon hunter can “see” the world
around him and suffers no penalty due to their blindness. Also when the prestige class is
taken there is no penalty brought on by their blindness or by their two weapon wielding
due to lacking a combative off-hand.
Other Classes: The demon hunter sees all classes in a different perspective. He sees
blades men/women of good alignment as trustworthy allies and depends on them in the
beginning of their duties while they start their training. The Rogues are too crafty to ever
be trusted by the demon hunter and clerics can’t be trusted by the ever-shifting eyes of
the demon hunter. Elves are seen in higher clarity than other races by the demon hunter,
and only the clerics of Elune can be trusted by the demon hunter.
Starting Characters (to become the prestige class): The starting fighters must take the
Demon Hunter Insignia as their beginning feat, but are granted one additional feat from
the bonus list at level one. The rite to earn the sacred warblades is done at level one, but
once the rite is done all weapon proficiencies are stripped from the character except for
the new proficiency for warblades. At level five the demon hunter in-training can wield
two warblades with no penalty. The rite sacrifices all on hand money and a pair of long
swords. The total on hand money must be at least fifty GP, but it is encouraged by Elune
that more is sacrificed for it is rumored that she may return your sight if you do her this
favor. All demon hunters in-training must blind themselves permanently, or until Elune
grants them their vision back. Negotiate with the DM about the attack penalty decrease
as you gain levels.
Bonus Languages: A demon hunter can substitute Abyssal for any of their bonus
languages. Also the demon hunter gains the language of demon hunters, which uses a
complicated version of elven. Outsiders of the order are forbidden from learning the
language.
Requirements:
Race: Elf
Class: Fighter
BAB: +6/+1
Demon Hunter Insignia (see below)
Demon Hunter Insignia: Once an elf is taken in he/she is marked by a symbol burned into
the back of their hands. From these the demon hunter summons their great powers. The
symbols are that of Elune, and match the symbols on their warblades.
Skills: Animal Empathy (Cha), Climb (Str), Concentration (Con), Handle Animal (Cha),
Hide (Dex), Jump (Str), Knowledge (demons) (Int), Listen (Wis), Move Silently (Dex),
Ride (Dex), Search (Int), Spot (Wis), Swim (Str), and Use Rope (Dex)
Armour & Weapon Proficiencies: Demon hunters can use light armor and the demonic
warblades (1d10+1 per level (max +5), Slashing, x2 critical (19-20))
Immolation: Every 3 levels, starting at level one; the demon hunter can turn the air
around him to a burning hellfire damaging everyone within a ten-foot radius. It deals
3d6+20 fire damage to everything within the blast radius. The demon hunter can do this
twice at level one, four times at level four, six times at level six, and finally eight times at
level ten.
Magic Burn: At the sixth level the demon hunter can burn the mind of any one-spell
caster for 3d8 turns. This can be used 3 times per day.
Evasion: Starting at the second level the demon hunter can dodge enemy fire more
proficiently. At level 2 the demon hunter has a ten percent chance of dodging the attack,
and this improves every three levels after that by ten percent.
Demonic Knowledge: At levels one, four, and seven the demon hunter gets a +2 to their
attack bonus against all chaotic and/or evil creatures.
Demonic Transformation: At tenth level the demon hunter can assume a demonic form.
He is not a real demon, merely a shadow; he is jet black except for two burning green
eyes. He gains an additional 2d10+75 HP during the transformation. Though he is
unable to use his warblades in this form (because they have helped form his demonic
arms) he can now make a ranged attack called Hellfire. Hellfire can hit anyone within a
fifty-foot radius, dealing 5d10+30 of unblockable damage, and gain an additional +5 to
their attack bonus in this state I’m not worried. This can be done once a day.
Arcane Eye (Su.): As the spell Arcane Eye cast by a wizard of equal level to the total
level of the demon hunter. This is an extension of the demon hunter and allows him/her
to see without breaking his/her oath to Elune. It can be used as many times per day as
twice their demon hunter level.
