The content of the given video is the definition of Pragmatics. This video is to introduce what
pragmatics is to the learners. Based on the video, pragmatics is the area of linguistic that puts
meaning in the context. The material that is presented in the video, as the following:

1. The definition of pragmatics


2. The principle in communication (cooperative principle)
3. Politeness
4. Interactional style
Pragmatics is the area of linguistics that puts meaning into context. Because sometimes we
don’t say exactly what we mean, and yet still manage to understand each other. Pragmatics is
here to convey the contextual meaning towards the hearer according to provided situation.

In cooperative principle, there are four main assumptions that pragmaticists talk about when
it comes to communication.
The first is Quality. This assumption is about telling the untruthful because we assume that
people are trying to communicate high-quality. For example, we calling one of our friend
“Sherlock” is because how much they’re not like Sherlock Holmes. It is like a sarcasm.
The second assumption is Quantity. This assumption is that people are giving us a
sufficient quantity of information. It means be informational, giving enough detail
information, but not too much.
The third is Relevance. Food label are generally align with this assumption. For example, if
a pack of gum says it is sugar-free, it is because gum sometimes does contain sugar. This
assumption can also be used for humor or to mislead that something is relevant when it
actually not.
The last is Manner. This assumption is that people will say things in a manner which is as
straightforward as possible for the context. Sometimes we say things in a less straightforward
manner in order to be more diplomatic.

The next part is about Politeness. Language have lots of other strategies for being polite. For
example, we can use implicature to ask without asking. It is actually depends of the tone that
we use. We can lower or soften our voice to ask other people what we want without actually
look “we ask for it”.

The last part is Interactional Style. It is divide into two style, as the following:
a. High-involvement: is a condition when a person do lots of overlap, talk at the same
time, and don’t any silence after the other person has finished speaking.
b. High-considerateness: is a condition when a person do not overlap and let other
people speak or leave space after someone else is finished before beginning their turn.

The video given is so understandable. The way the host explain is more than enough. She
always giving an example or real situations in every explanation. It really helps to understand
more about the material. Also, the language the host choose is quite easy because it is like a
daily language. The host also always smile in every explanation, it makes the viewer way
more relax and feel like this material isn’t that hard.
