The Influence of Media and Information to Communication

I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

How Communication is Influenced by Media and Information?

Communication is part of daily lives. From the time we wake up in the morning to
the time we sleep we communicate. Many factors affecting the way we communicate, from
the intention of the sender to the action of the receiver may cause the messages interpret
correctly or differently.
In this era, Media became the major sources of information. The action we do
sometimes depend on the information we collected from the media providers. It is important
to check the correctness of the information from media sources before we use it to
communicate with others. Because Media and Information affect communication

A. Let Us Study

Communication Media and Information

How media and information technology has affected communication in

everyone’s lives? What are its effects on face to face communication and how it has affected
us? Technology has also impacted us positively and negatively in our daily life
communication. Technology provided convenience and enable people to use more than
one method of communication simultaneously.

communication

The picture above depicts how each individual communicate at different

levels, at different forms. Each one of us has a personal concept of
communication. Communication is broadly defined as the imparting and
exchanging of information or news (Retrieved from https://www.merriam-
webster.com/dictionary/communication on October 31, 2018).
In order to communicate, we use different medium of communication to carry out the
message we want to convey. There are various outlets that we can use in order to deliver our
message. Few of the examples are listed below.

Table 1. Examples of Communication Medium

Communication Medium How it Works

Conversation Person to person interaction using one’s
voice as the tool to deliver the message.
Public Speaking One to many interaction using one’s voice as the tool to
deliver the message to a large number of people, at any
given time.
Documents/ Letters/ Mails Written messages in whatever form,
usually on paper and print.
Visual Art Messages rendered in the form of paintings, drawings,
photography, videos, images, and the like, that conveys
specific emotion, idea or thought.
Physical Medium Physical things such as tarpaulin billboards, posters,
in-package information contained in product packaging,
and the like
Digital/ Interactive Digital and electronic means to convey messages such as
website or computer application, primarily by the use of
internet.

How about you, can you add more to the list?

With the concept of communication defined above, how then can media affect
communication? But, before we discuss further on that, we will contextualize media, as it is
used in your daily lives and routine as students.

2
Since time immemorial, doing communication can be effective only if it complies
with the process. The generation of information pass on through the channel to the
recipient. This practice had been there since mankind learn to converse. And, as people
advances the way we communicate with our fellowmen, media and technology goes with
it too. Even at the advent of computers, we also use computers in communication to our
advantage.

Parts of Communication Process

1. Source or sender. It is where the information emanates. When using technology

this is the transmitter.
2. Encoding. The sender begins with the encoding process wherein he uses certain
words or non-verbal methods such as symbols, designs, body gestures, etc. To
translate the information into a message. The sender’s knowledge, skills,
perception, background, competencies, etc. has a great impact on the success of
the message.
3. Message/Information. Facts provided or learned about something or someone;
What is being conveyed in a communication
4. Decoding. The receiver interprets the sender’s message and tries to understand it
in the best possible manner.
5. Recipient or receiver. The person that gets the information relayed. The device that
reproduce the signal back to analog form so man can understand.
6. Channel. It is a passageway, the medium of access for a thing, a
communication, or an idea.
7. Noise. Noise essentially is anything that distorts a message by interpreting
with the communication.
8. Feedback. The Feedback is the final step of the process that ensures the receiver has
received the message and interpreted it correctly as it was intended by the sender.

Communication can be affected by external factors or from the environment.

Like news, it is changing and requires the support of facts and information. And therefore,
is affected by

Media

The media makes communicating a lot easier than before; there is

internet present today which enables chatting with friends and families

3
through phone screens and personal computers. It greatly affected the
distribution of information; it widened the range in just a short time. There
are also the TV Networks, radios, that broadcasts or communicates with a
large number of people. Newspapers, journals, tabloids and the likes are
another form of communication media and have their own genre of
communication.

Information

It is the supply of communication; it makes talking and sharing opinion with

others much more meaningful specially when answered with sense.
Information is what we talk about, even the mere thing that you inform your
parents that you are going to come home late via phone call or chat is giving
out information.
You see, these two things mentioned greatly affect communication in many ways.
But it helps for a greater cause, we people find the best ways to reach our loved ones and
any other people on that matter. For we want to make things easier and less of a hassle
so people invent ways through technology to improve communication.
Now people can use email, social media, chat messengers, video conferencing,
video calls, images, videos, symbols, diagrams, charts, emoticons, etc. for communication.
Radio and TV stations can now be heard or see through the mobile
phones and personal computer units too courtesy of the world wide web.
Even station from the remotest place on Earth can be ‘tuned’ as long as
internet signal is available. Not to fail to mention that newspapers and the
likes too are now in the same bandwagon with the broadcast media.
With all of these technology available to anyone, all they need to do is to consider
which one is appropriate to use for communicating. To avoid getting into trouble
communicating using today’s technology and media, we should consider the Media and
Information Design Framework.
The Media and Information Design Framework aims as a guide in the analysis,
design, development, implementation and evaluation of pertinent media and information
outputs. It is a helpful tool in using media and information in communication that
lead to the understanding between the sender and the receiver or visa-a-vis.

B. Let Us Practice

Activity 1: The Low-tech Future

1. You are living in the 21 at Century, where people are dependent on technology.
2. Imagine waking up one day to find no Internet, libraries, and cell phones.
Newspapers, magazines, radio stations and TV channels have also
disappeared.
3. Answer the following questions:
• How would you be informed of anything now?
• What ways would you have to communicate with one another?
• How would you share information and communicate news and events?
• What would happen with the decisions you usually make?
• How would it affect the way you live?
• What would you personally miss most in such a situation?
• What would society lose in this situation?

Activity 2: Identification of the Media and it Uses

With communicating, we make use of different channels so as to convey and/or

exchange information. Imagine a typical day in your life as a Senior High
School Student. Identify and list down ten (10) different kinds of media that you use in
order to communicate information and, identify the use of the specific media
listed if it is (A) Source of Information, (B) Medium of Communication, or (C) Both.

C. Let Us Remember

Media and information technology play a vital role in globalization.

Through these, we become connected to different people around the world.
These have a significant influence on the modern culture and become tools in
sharing information, ideas, personal messages, and other content and have
become more widespread and accessible. Not only that they become sources of
information, but entertainment as well. While media can be a good channel for
communication and a good source of information, they also pose some threats
to users.

D. Let Us Practice More

Activity 3: Apart but Never Alone

This time, we will read an article from Rappler.com (2020) which highlights
the immense value of meaningful connections to get us through these challenging
moments. After reading, you will share your story on how you maintain connections
during the pandemic time.

We are not alone. This pandemic teaches us the importance of

shared moments. Meaningful connections with our loved ones help us
get through this crisis MANILA, Philippines - There’s a universal truth
that has sprung from textbooks to reality in recent weeks: humans
need meaningful connections.
When rumors of Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ)
spread, many of us flocked to the supermarkets and drugstores to
stock up on food and medicines for our loved ones. Next thing we
knew, the rumors became reality.
We became isolated in our homes, far away from the people
we're used to be around with at work, school, or hangout places.
Loneliness hit us. And no matter how introverted or socially
flexible we considered ourselves to be, social isolation can be
overwhelming. This is especially true for most of us in the city
who only have ourselves to wake up to the next day.
But we are not alone. As cliché as it may seem, this phrase
speaks the truth. We are only physically isolated, not separated.
We are lucky that it’s the year 2020 and we have the Internet
as our friend. Through technology, we can connect with other
people: families, friends, and even strangers.
In fact, Filipinos are some of the most active internet users
worldwide. This probably isn’t news to anyone who’s active in Stan
Twitter, Subtle Asian Facebook groups, or those who regularly
communicate with OFW family members. Everywhere you look in the
virtual space, there’s a Filipino there. This only goes to show how
important communication and expression is to our culture.
For those who are only discovering this for the first time, open
your laptop or your phone. Click on the family members not living with
you today. Know that a few decades ago, seeing their faces on that small
screen and talking to them in real-time would have been impossible.
Your friends may not be next to you holding your hand while
you break down, at least they are just a click away. In the same
way, we can easily comfort our family and friends in these uncertain
times - whether through a call, text, chat, or a voice message in your
favorite app.
Moreover, the Internet has enabled us to come together to reach
out to those who need our help and support through the numerous
donation drives across online groups. These efforts remind us that every
little contribution can make a huge difference in the lives of others.
