Throughout the United States, the number of places where people are allowed to
smoke has gradually become smaller and smaller. First, it was banned on trains, buses and
planes, then in public places such as theatres and airports. Now you can’t smoke in any
workplace. Nonsmokers are definitely winning the battle. “Why should we breathe their
smoke?”, they say.
If they are lucky, smokers can still find some bars and restaurants where they can
light up a cigarette, but it may soon be banned there, too. Anti-smoking groups even think
that smoking ought to be banned in people’s homes.
Under new plans you won’t be able to smoke where there are more than ten visitors

Do you intend to study in American University? It takes a long time to get
accepted in most American schools, perhaps as much as a year. That’s why you should
start choosing a school as soon as possible. It’s also a good idea to apply to several
different institutions, so that you’ll have a better chance of acceptance at one. You should
start looking for information now, because the more information you have about each
college, the better choice you can make.
There are two good ways to get information you need. One is a general reference
book, called Guide to American Colleges and Universities. The other good source of
information is the catalogue published by each school.
You can study the general guide in almost any American library. This book has
many useful statistics, such as the number of students, the average test scores for people
accepted to the school, the number of books in the library, and the numbered faculty
members. You can also find the address each school in this book.
Although the general guidebook has helpful information, some of the facts may be
out of-date. For instance, many schools raise their tuition every year. Since you’ll need to
know what your education will cost, out-of-date information will not good enough.
Also, schools sometimes change their requirements for entrance. To be sure that you
are getting current information, write to the university and ask for its catalogue. The
catalogue not only has more detailed information. For instance, the catalogue can tell you
if there is a special foreign student advisor, what kind of courses are offered, and what
kind of housing is available. Some universities have dormitories, but at others you have
to find your own place to live.
With all of this information, you should be able to pick out several good
schools.

Despite the fact that too much fat can be harmful, a moderate fat intake is actually
essential to the maintenance of good health. Some of the symptoms of fat deficiency
include flaking skins, emaciation, reduced functioning of the immune systems, and
fertility problems. Recent studies have linked fat free diets to increase stress aggression,
and note that those who try to eliminate fat completely from their food intake may be at
risk for developing eating disorders: a small amount of fat in a meal will produce a feeling
of satiety which lasts much longer than the sensation of fullness produced by protein or
carbon hydrates.
At least two teaspoons of fat per day is needed in order for the digestive system to
absorb vitamins A, D, E and K, which are fat soluble. These vitamins are essential for
healthy hair, skin, teeth and eyes. Without the ability to absorb these vitamins, children
run the risk of developmental and neurological disorders. Adults need these vitamins to
manufacture fertility hormones.
Some types of fat actually help to reduce harmful cholesterol levels.
Polyunsaturated fats like chicken fat and olive oil, seem to lower blood cholesterol, while
saturated fats-those found in red meat, dairy products and tropical oils-seem to raise the
level of the kind of cholesterol which accumulates as plaque on arterial walls. Paying
attention to the type of fat consumed if just as important as reducing total fat intake.

With increasing development and use of computer technology, there is a new
disease to worry about. Computer "viruses", programs designed to sabotage computers,
are infecting computers in corporations, homes, and universities. These viruses spread
exponentially, much like biological contagion, and then disrupt the affected systems. The
virus secretly attaches itself to other programs and can then delete or alter files. The
damage is generally activated by using the computer's clock. Then, any program that is
executed may be exposed to the virus, including programs spread through telephone
connections. Because of the increasing incident of virus infiltration, business and agencies
are becoming wary of sharing software. Security policies need to be increased as
immunity programs.
Another problem relating to computers is computer crime. The increased use of
computers in business has been accompanied by a corresponding increase in computer
crime. Computers are used in business, in ever- increasing numbers to store, process and
distribute information. At the same time, thefts by computer are on the rise. The costs to
the victims of computer crime are very high. In his book, Crime by computer, computer
expert Donn B. Parker estimated that financial losses to business from computer thefts
exceeded $10 billion in 1978. Although Parker's estimate is based on documented cases,
no one really knows the extent of computer crime because thefts by computers are
almost impossible to discover. Parker stated that there was no reliable way to detect
computer thefts. It was not just the money they controlled; they controlled data, and data
was power.
36.The most people interested in reading this passage would probably be ……………

A. By deleting or altering files.
B. By attaching themselves to other programs and then deleting or
altering files.
C. By damaging the affected systems.
D. By attaching themselves to the affected systems.
38.Why is computer crime a serious problem?
A. Because it is very smart.
B. Because nothing can prevent it
C. Because people have no way to prevent it.
D. Because it causes heavy financial losses.
39. Why can't people know the extent of computer crime?
A. Because thefts by computers are very smart.
B. Because it is almost impossible to find out thefts by
computers
C. Because people have ineffective programs.
D. Because this is a new problem.
40. What did computer thefts control?
A. They not only controlled money but power as well.
