2. A plane is headed due east with air speed of 250 kph. If a wind of 30 kph is blowing from the north, find the
ground speed of the plane. Ans. 251.79 kph
3. A load of 200 lbs. is hung from the middle of a rope which is stretched between two rigid wall 30 ft. apart.
Due to the load, the rope sags 5 ft. in the middle. Determine the tension in the rope. Ans. T = 316.23 lbs.
4. Two lead balls whose masses are 5 kg and 0.75 kg are placed with their centers 75 cm. apart. With what
force do they attract each other? Ans. 4.44 x 10-10 .
5. A boat can travel 10 mi/hr in still water. What is the velocity with respect to the shore if it heads 45° East of
North? Ans. 7.07 mph
6. A 250 gm apple is thrown from the edge of a tall building with an initial speed of 20m/s. What is the
change in kinetic energy of the apple if it strikes the ground at 40m/s? Ans. 150 J
7. Determine the vertical pressure due to column of water 150 m high. Ans. 1.47 x 106 N/m2
8. A 1 k N weight hangs on a vertical rope. A man pushes this weight horizontally until the rope makes
an angle of 40with the vertical. What is the tension in the rope? Ans. 1305.41 N
9. A helical spring has a load of 1200 grams and its length has an elongation of 15 cm. If the spring is set into
vibration, what is the frequency? Ans. 1.29 Hz
10. At what angular velocity must the earth and a metal ball rotate so that the ball seems weightless? Assuming
radius of earth as 6400 km. Ans. 0.012 rpm
11. In a hydraulic press, the small cylinder has a diameter of 10 cm, while the larger piston has a diameter of
25 cm. If the force of 900 N is applied to the small piston, what is the force on the large piston, neglecting
friction? Ans. 5625 N
12. A turning fork of frequency 400 Hz is moving towards an observer with a speed of 2 m/s. What is the
apparent frequency of sound wave coming directly to the observer? Assume the speed of sound in air to
