Breaking up is hard to do
We asked four people to tell us about their worst break-ups. Their stories will amuse you -
or scare you!
John: Melissa and I were together for seven years. We were engaged, and we had set the wedding
date for next spring. I gave her a huge diamond ring - it took me almost a year to save enough
money for that ring. One day, I noticed she wasn't wearing it. She said, ''Oh, I must have left it in my
apartment.'' I asked her why she took it off in the first place. She looked very uncomfortable and
made up some excuse about not wanting to scratch it while she was cleaning her kitchen. Later that
day, we went back to her apartment with some take-out, and her kitchen was filthy. I knew she had
lied about why she took the ring off. I e-mailed her best friend to ask where Melissa was the night
before. It was pretty clear that she had been out on a date with someone else. I was heartbroken,
but I let her keep the ring. My advice: Just because you're with somebody for a long time doesn't
mean you should get married. Be sure before you make the commitment.
Francesca: I met Phil in college. He was the most fun-loving guy I had ever been around. For two
years, we were inseparable, and I think I laughed the whole time. Then my best friend, Chelsea,
asked me a question I'll never forget: ''Where do you see yourself in five years? Will you still be
with Phil?'' I realized that Phil was fun, but he wasn't relationship material. At least, not long-term;
he was more of a buddy. I thought about how often he had borrowed money from me or expected
me to pay for dinner. He was fun, but he couldn't hold down a job! I broke up with him that night.
He was so hurt; he said he would never laugh again. Every time I saw him after that, he was wearing
black and looking depressed. To this day, I worry about crushing his fun-loving spirit. I still haven't
found anyone as exciting as Phil, but I think I did the right thing. He needed to grow up, and I
needed to get serious.
Tami: Paulo and I had only been going out for a few months when the most embarrassing thing
happened. We were having a romantic dinner at my house, and all of a sudden, there was a knock at
the door. It was his parents! They barged right in and started asking me all kinds of personal
questions. ''What do your parents do for a living? Do you have any medical problems? What are
your goals for your career?'' It was crazy! I looked over at Paulo for help, and he was just sitting
there with his head down, staring at his shoes. It turns out, he hadn't told them about me yet, and
they had found out about me from one of his friends. They followed him to my house that night.
Don't get me wrong - I think it's fine to have a good relationship with your parents, and I would
have been happy to meet them in a normal way - but they went too far! I could see that Paulo would
never stand up to them. They would always rule his life. So I told him not to call me again.
Rick: I had the worst day ever. It was raining, and I had been late to work, completely soaked.
Somehow, on the way in, I had dropped my wallet. I didn't have any money for lunch. Then a bunch
of files were mysteriously deleted on my computer. I spent all day trying to recover them, but I
couldn't. At the end of the day, my boss called me into her office. She fired me! All I wanted to do

when I got home was sink into my wife's arms and tell her all my troubles. But when I got home, all
my stuff was out in the yard! It was still raining, so everything, even my best suit, was ruined. There
was a big sign on the front door: ''Rick, I want a divorce. Jenn.
'' I just turned around and went to a hotel. It was awful. Jenn said later that if she had known it was
such a bad day, she wouldn't have done it then. But she still wanted a divorce. I'm happier now
because I realize she could be a little bit cruel. Plus, she was a terrible housekeeper.

The house guest
''Home sweet home,'' sighed Miranda as she walked through the front door of her apartment
after six months' teaching English in Rome. She was excited. She was sure that her best friend,
Pam, the person she had shared her apartment with for years, was home. She let Pam live
with her because she knew that her personal possessions would be respected and house rules
wouldn't be necessary.
Miranda entered quietly. She wanted to surprise Pam. But as she walked in, a terrible smell
struck her. Horror filled her face as she looked around: the parquet floor had scratches all
over it, the cream silk cushions were stained and the hand-carved Moroccan coffee table had
been painted bright green. To make matters worse, she could also smell cigarette smoke. This
was a smoke-free house!
''Pam! Pam!'' she cried. Just then, she heard heavy footsteps coming down the stairs. To her
disgust, she looked up to see a huge, unshaven man wearing a dirty T-shirt and a pair of boxer
shorts. Miranda felt sick. It was obvious her home had been taken over by some kind of
intruder. The man seemed relaxed.
''Hey,'' he yawned. ''I'm Miles.''
''My apartment! What have you done? And who are you?'' she demanded.
''Hey, Miranda. You've been in Italy, haven't you? Wow! Pam didn't tell me how beautiful you
are.''

''Don't look at me like that! Are you responsible for this?'' she asked, pointing to the green
coffee table.
''Whoa, calm down,'' he responded. ''I thought it looked a little boring, so I used my artistic
talents to brighten it up a little.''
Miranda was about to explode. Just then, Pam walked in with a bag of groceries.
''Miles, I'm sorry I took so long. I'll make breakfast now,'' she said cheerfully. Then, seeing
Miranda, she exclaimed, ''It's great to have you back! I see you've met Miles already. I have so
much to tell you.''
''Yes, you do!'' replied Miranda. ''What has happened to my apartment? And who is this awful
guy? You know I don't allow smoking in the house. And what is all this trash?'' she cried,
looking around the room.
Pam felt surprised by Miranda's reaction. ''But you don't have any house rules, remember?
And don't worry about the mess. We'll clean up later. Miles is just a little messy, aren't you, my
love?'' she said, going over to kiss him. Miles laughed. ''I guess. I'm not really into rules. We all
have to make a stand, you know what I'm saying? The establishment ... and stuff.'' He yawned,
adding, ''Listen, it was a late night last night, so I'm going to go back to bed for a few hours. See
you later.''
''This is my home! And, from now on, I DO have rules!'' shouted Miranda, as he disappeared
up the stairs. They heard the bedroom door shut. Pam was famous for her awful boyfriends,

Urban drift and shantytowns
About half the world's population currently lives in cities. This [1]_____ More and more, people
from rural areas are moving to urban areas, in a phenomenon known as urban drift, in order
to find work. Urban drift, however, only seems to increase the gap between rich and poor, not
reduce it. This is especially apparent in the poor settlements known as shantytowns around
some of the world's largest cities. At present, over one billion people in the world live in
shantytowns in homes made from plastic, metal, cardboard or wood. Shantytowns usually
lack proper sanitation, clean water or electricity, yet they are often on the periphery of
modern cities where these facilities are readily available. Shantytowns are most often found in
developing nations, where there is already an unequal distribution of wealth. They can often
reach the size of entire cities.
For example, [2]_____ This Pakistani shantytown is 57 square kilometers in size. Khayelitsha in
Cape Town, South Africa, is considered to be the biggest on the African continent. In Latin
America, large shantytowns are common in Brazil, Argentina and Venezuela. In Europe, they
are less common, but they do exist. On the outskirts of Madrid, Cañ ada Real is an example of a
neighborhood where living conditions are similar to those in the shantytowns of the
developing world. Because construction in shantytowns is informal and unplanned, street
signs and basic infrastructure don't exist. If there is any infrastructure, it is likely to be
disorganized, old and of poor quality. Community [3]____ As a result, fires are a particular
danger in shantytowns. In 1953, for example, 53,000 people living in a slum on the hills of
Shek Kip Mei in Hong Kong were made homeless in just a few hours after a huge fire. It is also
no surprise that [4]____ Despite the high level of criminal activity, shantytowns are also places
of hope and creativity. In many of these marginalized communities, a counterculture of arts
and sports is emerging hand in hand with a desire from the younger generations to succeed.
Shantytowns, however, are still places where every day is a struggle to survive. Even for the
young and enthusiastic, [5]_____.
1. 5 a. there are many obstacles to overcome.
2. 4 e. shantytowns have high rates of crime.
3. 3 c. services, like firefighting, don't exist either.
4. 2 b. the largest slum in Asia is the Orangi Township.
5. 1 d. is set to increase to 70 percent by 2050.
