Directions: Write the letter that you think is the best answer
to each question on a sheet of paper. Answer all items. After
taking and checking this short test, take note of the items that you
were not able to answer correctly and look for the right answer
as you go through this module.
a. x=-2, -4 b. x= 2, 4 c. x = -3, -4 d. x= 3, 4

14m2. How long is the garden?
a. 9m b. 7m c. 5m d. 2m
Example:
What number should be added to x 2+ 6x + _____to make it a perfect square
trinomial?
Solution:
• This is simple, all you have to do is to take the numerical coefficient
of the linear term, divide it by 2, and square the result.
• x2+ 6x+_____
• The numerical coefficient of the linear term (x) is 6.
• 6/2 = 3 32 9
• So the number to be added must be 9 and the perfect square trinomial
is x2+ 6x + 9.
Make it Perfect!
Directions: Determine a number that must be added to make
each of the following a perfect square trinomial. Explain how
you arrived at your answer.
1. x2 + 2x + ______
2. p2 - 30p + ______
3. w2 + 21w + _____

4. s2 - s + ______

5. h2 - 4h + ______
The following are the steps in solving quadratic equations by completing the
square:
1. Write all terms containing the unknown to the left side of the equation and the
constant term to the right side.
2. Divide each term of the equation by the numerical coefficient of x2 term. This
will make the equation to the form x2 + bx = c.
3. Divide the coefficient of x by 2, square it, then add the answer to both sides of
the equation.
4. Factor the left side of the equation. This is a perfect square trinomial. Simplify
the right side.
5. Take the square root of both sides. Write the ± sign before the square root at
the right side.
6. Equate the square root of the left side expression to the positive square root at
the right side in step 5. Then find the second root of the equation.
7. Equate the square root of the left side expression at the negative square root
of the right side in step 5. Then find the solution to the equation.
8. Check each root by substituting it to the original equation.

Study the following examples showing the steps of solving quadratic equations by
completing the square.
In the second example, if the coefficient of x2 in the given equation is not one, use
a property of equality to find an equivalent in which the coefficient of x 2 is 1. Before
completing the square to solve the equation 3x 2 -6x = 4, divide each term by 3, the
coefficient of x2, to obtain x2 – 6/3x = 4/4 which can then be solved by completing the
square. The complete solution is shown below.
x2 – 2x + 1 =

This time you will use the mathematical ideas and the
examples presented in the preceding section to answer
the next activity.
Sample Problem:
Riza is 5 years older than Ana. Find their present ages if the product
of Riza’s age 4 years from now and Ana’s age 5 years ago is 51.
Solution:
Let a = Ana’s age
a + 5 = Riza’s present age
Representing by table:
Equation:
(a + 9) + (a – 5) = 51
a2 + 4a – 45 = 51
a2 + 4a = 96
2
a + 4a + 4 = 96 + 4
a2 + 4a + 4 = 100
(a + 2 )2 = 100
√(a + 2 )2 = √100
a + 2 =±10
A = ±10 -2
a =8 or a = -12
