2. Modal verbs. Verbos modales


They are auxiliary verbs that provide additional and specific meaning to the main verb of the sentence. Sometimes,
modal verbs are refered to as modal auxiliary verbs because they help other verbs. Son verbos auxiliares que aportan
un significado adicional y específico al verbo principal de la oración. A veces, los verbos modales se denominan verbos
auxiliares modales porque ayudan a otros verbos.

TYPE MODAL VERBS EXAMPLES


- David can speak three languages.
ABILITY Can, Could - He could speak fluent Spanish when he was 5.
- Can I sit in that chair please?
PERMISSION Can, Could, May - Could I open the window?
- May I borrow your dictionary?

ADVICE Should - You should visit your dentist at least twice a year.
