ASSIGNMENT

WISCONSIN ONTARIO
CIT-221-046/2017
QUESTION 1
(a) If you had been one of the original inventors of the WIMP interface, and engineers on the
technical team had been sceptical about the advantages that it would bring, then:
(i) What two pieces of empirical evidence could you have presented to sceptics to help
convince them? [2 marks
1) It supports a wide range of users. The interface allows the use of shortcuts (that are easily
created) to have the user execute their actions faster.
2) This type of user interface is easy to use i.e user friendly especially for a beginner. It
makes interaction with a computer easy. Once the user knows how to work with the
interface, they can easily get to work on whatever it is that they need.
(ii) Describe the technique that you would use to collect data for each of these. [4 marks]
 Interviewing – This involves a dialog with users of WIMP by asking questions regarding
the interface and how their experience is using it.
 Online Surveys -The performance of these surveys is much more widespread than the
other data collection methods. They are straightforward in their implementation and take
a minimum time of the respondents. I would use the technique in order to know how
many people are using the interface.
(iii) Describe the technique that you would use to analyse each of those data sets. [4 marks]

Descriptive Statistics - Typically descriptive statistics (also known as descriptive analysis) is the
first level of analysis. It helps researchers summarize the data and find patterns. From our results
we can get mean, median and mode in order to know how WIMP is used among people

Content analysis: This method is used to analyze qualitative data. It is used to analyze
documented information in the form of texts, media, or even physical items. Content analysis is
usually used to analyze responses from interviewees and thus I would use it to know the
experience of the users with the interface

QUESTION 2
(a) If you were the HCI researcher on a speech interaction project intended to replace the
WIMP interface, then
(i) Which of the techniques described above would be most relevant to your work? Why? [3
marks]
Content analysis would be the most relevant techniques to my work because from it I would be
able to analyze the data and come up with answers on how users are having experience using the
WIMP interface. I would then come up with an interface that would replace WIMP based on
their responses.
(ii) Explain how a modern analytic evaluation method could give design guidance to the
team, including a description of how the analysis would be conducted, and two design
improvements that might result from that analysis. [2 marks]
The evaluation method that could give guidance to the team is behavioral checklist, self-analysis,
management objectives, 360-degree feedback etc.

The analysis can be made with respect to the system functioning, requirement and working
principle of the systems where computer science, cognitive science and human factor for
engineering are to be implemented.

design improvements

 Improving the interaction speed and efficiency.

 Human computer interactions in an expanded way and automating the interaction

process.

 Assistive Technologies for Blind or Visually Impaired Users by directly designing

multimodal interfaces rather than trying to convey visual information via another
modality.

 Allow users to choose which modalities can be involved in the interacting process, and
which have to be free for other task, as traffic management or air traffic control e.g in a
face-to-face meeting, it would be better to dedicate vision to the interaction with the other
person, and not to the computer.
