Maria Clara: Dance & Tradition

Maria Clara dances were Spanish-influenced dances performed by Filipinos to celebrate their class and distinction during the colonial era. One example is the Carinosa dance, a folk dance of Hispanic origin where the fan or handkerchief plays an instrumental role in placing the couple in a romantic scenario representing the shy behavior of Filipina women. The Carinosa was named the national dance of the Philippines during the Marcos regime but the government maintains the national dance is actually the native Tinikling dance.
