7-3 Study Guide and Intervention: Rational Exponents

This document contains a study guide and practice problems involving rational exponents. It begins with definitions of rational exponents and how they can be used to represent nth roots. Examples are given of writing expressions with rational exponents in radical form and vice versa. The document then provides practice problems for students to write expressions in radical or exponential form and to simplify expressions with rational exponents. Finally, it presents exercises for students to solve exponential equations by using properties of exponents.

Rational Exponents
Rational Exponents For any real numbers a and b and any positive integer n, if 𝑎𝑛 = b, then a is an nth root of b.
Rational exponents can be used to represent nth roots.

1
Square Root 𝑏 2 = √𝑏
1
Cube Root 𝑏 3 = 3√𝑏
1
nth Root 𝑏 n = 𝑛√𝑏

Rational Exponents
Solve Exponential Equations In an exponential equation, variables occur as exponents. Use the Power Property of
Equality and the other properties of exponents to solve exponential equations.

Example: Solve 𝟏𝟎𝟐𝟒𝒙−𝟏 = 4.

1024𝑥−1 = 4 Original equation

(45 )𝑥−1 = 4 Rewrite 1024 as 45 .

45𝑥−5 = 41 Power of a Power, Distributive Property

5x − 5 = 1 Power Property of Equality

5x = 6 Add 5 to each side.

6
x=5 Divide each side by 5.

Exercises
Solve each equation.
𝟏𝟏
1. 2𝑥 = 128 7 2. 33𝑥 + 1 = 81 1 3. 4𝑥 − 3 = 32
𝟐

𝟏
4. 5𝑥 = 15,625 6 5. 63𝑥 + 2 = 216 6. 45𝑥 − 3 = 16 1
𝟑

𝟏
7. 8𝑥 = 4096 4 8. 93𝑥 + 3 = 6561 9. 11𝑥 − 1 = 1331 4
𝟑

10. 3𝑥 = 6561 8 11. 25𝑥 + 4 = 512 1 12. 7𝑥 − 2 = 343 5

13. 8𝑥 = 262,144 6 14. 55𝑥 = 3125 1 15. 92𝑥 − 6 = 6561 5

16. 7𝑥 = 2401 4 17. 73𝑥 = 117,649 2 18. 62𝑥 − 7 = 7776 6

19. 9𝑥 = 729 3 20. 83𝑥 + 1 = 4096 1 21. 133𝑥 − 8 = 28,561 4
