A Case Study about the MOTORBUS COMPANY: Que Sera Sera

I. INTRODUCTION

When Engineer Hermogenes Ancheta joined Motorbus Company in 1993, he had

recently completed the board exams for Mechanical Engineering. He told his former
University of Santo Tomas classmates in 1995 that he had been elevated to Assistant
Manager for the Maintenance Department. His employer congratulates him on his
promotion and advises him to keep his department in order.

Engineering Hermogenes Ancheta is faced with the challenge of making his

department's operations more efficient and successful. Some sections were in
overabundance, while others were understocked. Within the next 30 days, the Motorbus
Company will get an extra 50 new buses. This means that over 100 buses will be serving
the different routes by the end of next month.

II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Engineer Gaudencio Inductivo's retirement application was granted by the President

while he was in his early sixties. Engineer Hermogenes Ancheta will now take on the role
he has undertaken for years. Engr. Ancheta arrived unexpectedly, but he brought with him
a package of burdens from the former maintenance department management.

How will Engr. deal with the simultaneous arrival of extra buses to manage and the
discovery of a newly discovered problem in the maintenance department? Will Ancheta be
able to tackle each problem and emerge victorious?

The following are the questions that must be answered:

1. In what way can Engr. Hermogenes Ancheta capable of making his department's
operations as efficient and successful as possible?
2. What activities does he need to do in order to enhance the previous purchase
method?

3. How will he deal with the insufficient quantity of required equipment and supplies,
as well as the surplus and obsolete components he discovered in the storage room?

III. SOLUTIONS AND ADVANTAGES

1. The circumstance that Engineer Ancheta has found himself in may cause him to feel
oppressed because he will be handling such procedures with a slew of issues. In order
to eliminate this type of issue, Engr. Ancheta should devote a significant amount of
time and thought to organizing and articulating the essential areas to consider. His
department's main purpose is to make operations more efficient and effective, which is
clearly stated. With this feeling of direction, he can now focus on devising plans and
methods that will help him achieve the priority he set. Engineer Ancheta's situation
may make him feel oppressed because he will be dealing with a flurry of troubles as a
result of these processes. In order to resolve such a problem, Engr. Ancheta should
spend a lot of time and effort compiling and explaining the most important points to
examine. His department's major goal is to improve operational efficiency and
effectiveness, which is expressed plainly. With this sense of direction, he can now
concentrate on designing strategies and procedures to assist him reach the goal he set
for himself. He should make certain that the personnel in the maintenance department
aspire to achieve the objective he has set. Engr. Ancheta should also assess his
employees' performance and the quality of their job in order to maintain a steady and
successful business within his sphere of influence. In this way, his boss's verbal
direction to establish order in his department and ensure that operations are as effective
and efficient as possible would be carried out.

2. Engr. Ancheta should make an inventory of the items or parts in the maintenance
department's storage room. Excessive parts can be retained in the storage room for
future uses or can be subjected for sale to retailers. Since obsolete parts have no use, it
can be pulled out and sent to junks shops to save space.

3. The old method of purchasing needs to be improved because it was evidently seen from
the previous management that it made complaints and conflicts. Engr. Ancheta should

assign persons that can be requested to do the purchasing and are readily available as
soon as the approval of purchase request from the company accountant is granted. By
this course of action, he can assure that the purchase requests will not accumulate in
his desk and will not be ignored.

IV. DISADVANTAGES
1. Engineer Hermogenes Ancheta might expend a lot of time and energy to adjust with
his new role. Hiring additional mechanics and assistants could mean added financial
obligations to the Motorbus Company. Looking for skilled workers is time consuming
and trainings need ample time to mold one's skills and knowledge.

2. The newly created purchase procedure is now being tested. Because it's new, some
tweaking is required, and Engr. Ancheta is anticipated to conduct tests to see if it is
more successful than the previous manner of purchase.

3. In the event that Engr. Ancheta will do his own inventory, which will cost him money.
Although it would add to his workload, as the manager, he must guarantee that all parts
of his department are fully reviewed. Discrepancies may be a concern, therefore he
should ask his department members to contribute some time counting and classifying
inventories for the sake of accuracy and speeding up the task's completion.

V. CONCLUSION

There are broken systems under the maintenance department that are needed to be
fixed as soon as possible so that operations will be effective and efficient. Engr.
Hermogenes Ancheta's promotion happened with the influx of problems. With the
potential he obtains, his boss appointed and entrusted him with such crucial position
which entails a bigger responsibility.

The owner of the Motorbus Company in Nigeria's capital, Abuja, needs to invest in
planning for the future. He can produce a hiring plan to have a reference while finding
for additional mechanics and assistants. The option of initiating trainings should be
considered to enhance the skills of the workers.

When the old purchase technique was implemented, there were several conflicts.
Creating a new one may make the existing situation easier for Engr. Ancheta is up
against it. He can spend his time managing his scope of duty instead of worrying about
purchase requests piling up and being ignored thanks to the newly created way of
assigning people to conduct the shopping. Given that it is still in the early stages of
implementation, he should watch to see if it improves things.

Parts in the storage room are classified into three categories: inadequate, excessive
and obsolete. If parts are considered inadequate, he should immediately make a
purchase request so that the operations will continue to move. Excess parts can be
reserved for future purposes or can be sold to retailers. Obsolete parts can also be
redirected to junk shops to save space.

Engr. Hermogenes Ancheta will now be held responsible for the maintenance
department's activities. He needs to be able to make plans on his own while keeping an
eye on the growth of the firm he works for. He must be adaptable to changing
circumstances in order to cope with a variety of technical issues. He may be the efficient
manager he wishes to be with his effort.

A Case Study About

BITS AND PIECES INTERNATIONAL COMPANY: Little Things Mean a Lot

I. INTRODUCTION

The Bits and Pieces International Corporation (BPIC) was only incorporated four years
ago. Its certificate of incorporation has only been approved by the Securities and Exchange
Commission (SEC). The company produces various injection molded plastic products. It
operates on two activities: production of stocks to be sold to the local market and
production as a subcontractor.

BPIC has been declared profitable at current output levels, it does maintain a sales
force. The top management has seen potential in the company that they considered to have
expansion and it was also decided to add new to the existing line of products. The president
ordered the general manager to prepare an organization chart for the new set up.

II. STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM

Despite the company's consistent development and success in its operations, there is
still a need to rely on sustainability. The company's uneven sales force is one of the flaws
discovered. To sustain progress and maintain its attempts at greater heights, growth and
development must be carried out.

Engineer Lagayan, as Production Manager, is one of the people who will be required
to provide well-founded and critical points at the next meeting on the suggested setup. How
will he be able to provide insights and end the meeting with a fruitful conversation, given
the sales target goals and the general status of the company?

The Engr. Lagayan that must be answered. The following questions are some to
consider:

1. What specifics regarding the idea would he need to comment on, and how will he
be able to back up his claims?
Name: Lester Khiets Roa Course & Section: BSCE 2-A

2. What insights can a BPIC Production Manager supply to preserve order in future
operations now that a new product is being proposed?
3. What should he think about to bridge the gap between the opposing viewpoints that
may emerge throughout the meeting?

III. SOLUTIONS AND ADVANTAGES

1. Engineer Lagayan must focus on weighing the effectiveness of the entire proposed
set-up. He should examine if each position will coordinate with the other or can
bring out the expectations attached to them. He must reflect that the structure must
serve as a way to reach the organization's goals. The posts that have been suggested
still lack the appropriate personnel. Engineer Lagayan may argue that the
company's sales should be overseen by a sales manager or a marketing executive.
The company's expectations are rising, and with sales targets set for the next three
years, BPIC requires someone who understands the complexities of commercial
transactions. It's also vital to keep a sales staff in place to ensure that items are
distributed to clients and markets while sales territories are established. In the case
of the proposed extra product, the tissue holder, sales would increase as well, thus
officers who are competent of performing this duty are required. Furthermore, they
will be in charge of maximizing revenues by designing sales plans that match to
consumer needs and advertising the product. They will also be able to make their
department's sales staff more efficient. More significantly, if someone can aid with
sales, the general manager, who also serves as the marketing executive, will be able
to work effectively. Another point is assigning subordinates for the Finance
Manager and the Quality Control and Research and Development Manager. The
managers need persons to execute their tasks in their respective departments. If
BPIC is on their way on hiring these managers, might as well they should assign
staffs or officers so that they can work appropriately and effectively.

2. With the potential that the top management can see in the company, the bar was
raised higher than the previous. The company made provisions for the improvement
of the land, building, machinery and equipment. By the enlargement of the
Name: Lester Khiets Roa Course & Section: BSCE 2-A

production volume, the goal was elevated but as Engineer Lagayan is the
Production Manager, he must realize that it is not all about the facilities but also the
workforce. An increase in productivity will have an indication that the revenue will
also increase. Hiring additional helpers can greatly affect the production now that
an added product is on its way to the production line. Maintaining the machinery
and equipment must be followed accordingly to avoid the disruption of the
operations.

3. It is unavoidable to come into contact with people who hold opposing opinions and
beliefs. If the important officers' ideas on the agenda and presentations diverge,
they should consider each other's viewpoints and meet midway. The company's
vision is a bigger discussion, and they must relate to their key aims and objectives.
Engineer Lagayan must maintain his composure and resolve the issue at hand. He
must convey his thoughts properly in order to avoid any ambiguity.

IV. DISADVANTAGES
1. The organization chart created by the general manager may not be as successful as
the corporation anticipates. Engineer Lagayan's comments to be presented during
the meeting may or may not be considered viable by the board. He'll need to make
a lot of preparations to back up his claims. It takes a long time to create one that is
captivating. In order to avoid gaps in his proposals or comments, he should
investigate and observe.
2. When undertaking growth, increasing the number of suggested roles to carry out
procedures may not be the most dependable approach to grasp. Investing in the
talents and development of current personnel, on the other hand, might help the
firm get out of its current dilemma. Although more people can help with operations
and maintenance of machinery and equipment, the company's financial obligations,
such as salaries, may grow before profits.
3. Some insights can be hostile to others and might cause conflict. Understanding
must be prioritized to deal with the differences in viewpoints.

V. CONCLUSIONS

Engineer Lagayan is one of the managers and must share ideas towards the proposal
for the expansion of BPIC. Business is more on a collaborative output and collective effort
of the employees. With the expansion that the top management decided, there are areas that
are needed to include in a bigger picture.

Engineer Lagayan was challenged to prepare the points he needs to present when a
meeting comes. He must raise his concerns especially about making a product planning
committee. The sales force must be maintained so having a sales manager or a marketing
executive is necessary. Adding subordinates to the proposed managers should be brought
to light.

Because they'll be having a meeting, different points of view may inevitably emerge.
They should respect each other's viewpoints and come to a consensus.

One of the mainstays of the BPIC is Engineer Lagayan. His proposals will be an
important piece of the puzzle in achieving the aim they all want to achieve: a well-defined
image of long-term success.
