The SD-VDTK Air Velocity Test Kit is used in conjunction with
a suitable air pressure differential meter (supplied by the
installer) to measure the air pressure differential between the
air sampling tube and the air exhaust tube inside a
SuperDuct™ duct smoke detector. The kit contains two rubber
stoppers, two metal tubes, and two rubber hoses. Air sampling

Measuring air pressure differential
Air pressure
For the duct smoke detector to operate as designed, there differential
must be a sufficient amount of difference in air pressure meter
between the air inlet and the air exhaust to pull smoke
particulate through the sensing chamber.
Figure 1: Duct detector pressure differential test setup
Air pressure differential must be measured when the duct
smoke detector is first installed.
Air pressure differential must measure between 0.005 and 1.00
inches of water. If the air pressure differential does not fall
within this range, check the duct smoke detector for air leaks or
blockages. In addition, check the sampling tube for correct
orientation.
If the required air pressure differential cannot be obtained,
relocate the duct smoke detector and seal all holes in the
HVAC duct.
Note: In order to measure the air pressure differential, air must
be moving through the HVAC system.
To measure air pressure differential:
1. Assemble the rubber stopper, metal tube, and rubber hose
as shown in Figure 1. Connect the rubber hoses to both
openings on the air pressure differential meter.
2. Remove the detector cover.
3. Plug the rubber stoppers into the air sampling tube and
the air exhaust tube as shown in Figure 1.
4. Verify that the reading on the air pressure differential
meter falls between 0.005 and 1.00 inches of water.
