convenient times and looking that proper assignments have been given to the students. The mentor also ensures
that all the entries regarding attendance and marks of the students are updated in the portal e-sampark. He / She
addresses any problems faced by the students and forward the issues to the Head of the department who takes
needful actions. The mentors communicate with students in person as well as through a whatsapp group which
has all the students of class, all the faculty members who are teaching in the class and the Head of the
department. Whatsapp group is used when some information or rescheduling is to be notified off the timings of

Association organises activitie like rune for unity, lecture series,

CRITERION VI – GOVERNANCE, LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT

6.1 – Institutional Vision and Leadership
6.1.1 – Mention two practices of decentralization and participative management during the last year (maximum 500
words)

We arranged meeting of former students to share their opinions and experience

which are incorporated in the designing of our new curriculum. PhD and M.Phil.
Scholars also form part of our teaching process. Research students are very
much involved in our academic activities. Apart from the research scholars, we
also invite some of our alumini who are doing well as visiting faculties. It
makes our learning modules automatically decentralized and more participatory.
For Example, there are two modules for final year students and students have to
choose either of these two modules. These modules are Media Research Project
and Dissertation. In the Media Research Project, a student has the option to
choose any of the following: radio production, film production, street theatre
performance and photography. The other main option is the Dissertation. The
Department gives ample of choices for the student to fully participate and have
inner space to express themselves. The evolution process is fully
decentralized. The decentralization in the evolution process of student
performance is a very special feature of our department. For example, students
are awarded 100-marks for completing NGO internship. Student spend full one
month in different rural areas of the country. It is expected that each student
is assessed by the evaluation report submitted by the NGO where the internship
was held. We conduct the same process for our various practical evolution. For
Development Communication programme students have two - week compulsory rural
internship as compulsory paper. All students are expected to spend about a
minimum of two weeks in different villages of Gujarat and India to understand
issue of rural development and rural communication. There is a report for
evaluation on the student presented by a rural communication expert. In shorts
the students develop skills in the following areas: • Rural exposure, • NGO
exposure, • Radio Production, • film production, • Media project and • Theatre
performances. The department practices participative management by
decentralizing the overall functions as well as day to day activities of the
department. Core jobs of the department are assigned to different faculty
members. The placement, time-table making, Cultural activities, Sports, library
and examination related activities are executed under supervision of dedicated
faculty members. To regulate day to day scheduling of lectures and manage
activities, for each class a mentor is assigned. To the class level, a class
representative takes care of activities to and from the teachers. Though, there
are dedicated support staff for other activities of department like cleaning,
gardening, maintenance of equipments, furniture and electrical fittings etc., a
faculty member is also made responsible to keep check on support activities.
Each Professor proactively show the responsibility of the department tasks so a
hierarchical Approach is insignificant. The faculty meeting exchange ideas
almost daily over tea and periodically during staff meetings. The admin staff
also support proactively and manage their tasks in time. To make quality the
defining element in teaching and research through a combination of self and
external quality evaluation, promotion and sustainable initiatives.
