Class Description: This class is an introductory level on applying some of numerical
methods in civil/structural engineering. The class will cover several topics include solution
of non-linear equations, solution of simultaneous equations, numerical interpolation,
numerical integration, solution of initial and boundary value problems and finite
differences method.
Class Overview: The basic learning objectives for this class are essential for engineers to
find an approximate solution for the complicated problems that does not have an exact
solution. The numerical analysis solution uses simple math operations with some
comparisons to approach toward the analytical solution. Thus, several and sometimes many
steps are required to reach the approximate answer, and that needs computer to make this
scenario faster and easier. Therefore, a numerical laboratory would be taken with the
theoretical approximation to accomplish the benefit from this class.
Credits: 5 hrs / wk (2 hrs analytical eng.+2 hrs numerical meth.+1 hr numerical lab.)
Course Learning Outcomes: By the end of this class, students would be able to:
1. Find the solution for non-linear equations using several methods.
2. Solve a set of simultaneous equations with various approaches.
3. Estimate a missing value or interpolate an intermediate value.
1
4. Compute the approximate integration or the area under the curve for complex
functions.
5. Calculate the initial and boundary value problems and their application.
6. Understand the finite difference method and applying the concepts to find the
deformations and forces in structural elements.
Homework Policy: Students must do the homework problems in order to learn the
material. Homework will be assigned each week in lecture/recitation and is expected from
every student one week later in class. Late assignments will not be accepted without a valid
excuse. Penalties for late assignments will be assessed depending on the circumstances.
Academic Integrity: Students are expected to be honest and ethical in their academic
work.
plagiarism ‐ representing the words or ideas of another person as one's own.
Grading Policy: The grade will be based on:
