Present simple:
Use present simple with:
a. When you want to communicate states or permanent actions.
Cuando quieres comunicar estados o acciones permanentes.
The earth is the third planet from the sun.

b. By manifesting states or situations that are routine or actions that


have periodicity. Al manifestar estados o situaciones que son
rutinarias o acciones que tienen periodicidad.
Every ten years is a decade.

c. To talk about habits, routines or events that are repeated in certain


periods of time. Para hablar de hábitos, rutinas o hechos que se
repiten en lapsos de tiempo determinado.
I drink coffee every morning.

d. When you give directions, instructions and signals. Cuando das


direcciones, instrucciones y señales
You go down this street to the cinema, then you turn right.
e. To transmit appointments, events or commitments that will happen
in a certain time. Para transmitir citas, hechos o compromisos que
pasarán en un tiempo determinado.
Tomorrow is my birthday!

GRAMMAR:
Afirmativa Sujeto + verbo + complemento

Negativa Sujeto + auxiliar do/does not + verbo + complemento

Interrogativa Auxiliar do/does + sujeto + verbo + complemento

EXAMPLES:
 I drink too much coffee
 I do not drink too much coffee
 Do I drink too much coffee?
 You drink too much coffee.
 You do not drink too much coffee.
 Do you drink too much coffee?
 He drinks too much coffee.
 He does not drink too much coffee.
 Does he drink too much coffee?
 She drinks too much coffee.
 She does not drink too much coffee.

THE PRESENT SIMPLE AND THE THIRD PERSON


RULE 1: In the affirmative sentences of the present simple to all the verbs
an -s is added at the end. Do not forget that, when being in negative and
interrogative sentences, the -s should not be put. When verbs end in -o, -
sh, -ch, -ss, -x and -z you must add -es to the end. En las oraciones
afirmativas del present simple a todos los verbos se les adiciona una -s al
final. No olvides que, al encontrarse en oraciones negativas e
interrogativas, la -s no debe ponerse. Cuando los verbos finalizan en -o, -sh,
-ch, -ss, -x y -z debes añadirles -es al final.

Verb THIRD PERSON


To go IR He goes
To wish DESEAR She wishes
To catch ATRAPAR He catches
To kiss BESAR She kisses
To mix MEZCLAR He mixes
To whiz SILBAR She whizzes

RULE 2: For verbs ending in -y, you must replace -y with i and then add -es.
Verb THIRD PERSON
To cry LLORAR He cries

To spy ESPIAR She spies

To worry PREOCUPAR He worries

RULE 3: There is another exception for verbs ending in -y. When there is a
vowel before the -y, you must keep it and add the -s. Existe otra excepción
para los verbos terminados en -y. Cuando hay una vocal antes de la -y,
debes conservar esta y adicionar la -s.

Examples:
 He lives in Chicago.
 She works in a bank.
 Penguin eats fish.
 He loves his children.
 He visits his parents twice a month.

 He speaks three languages: French, Spanish and Portuguese.
