A. From the various definition of research, what are the common points of view about it?
Common Points of View
Reference of Research Common Points of View
Creswell (2002) Quantitative research is the process of
collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and writing
the results of a study, while qualitative research
is the approach to data collection, analysis, and
report writing differing from the traditional,
quantitative approaches. [1]
John. W. Creswell (2008) In the broadest sense of the word, the definition
of research includes any gathering of data,
information and facts for the advancement of
knowledge. A process of steps used to collect
and analyze information to increase the
understanding of a topic or issue”. [2]
Gratton & Jones (2009) A systematic process of discovery and
advancement of human knowledge. Any honest
attempt to study a problem systematically or to
add to man's knowledge of a problem. [3]
Payton (1979) Process of looking for a specific answer to a
specific question in an organized, objective,
reliable way. [4]
Kothari (1993) The conceptual structure with which the
research is conducted. It constitutes the blue

measurement which comprises data
identification, arrangement and summarization,
and data analysis. [5]
B. Look for additional information on the emerging types of research purposes
1. Pure research is carried out to generate new human knowledge. To uncover new facts
or fundamental principles you need pure research. The researcher wants to advance in
a specific field, for example, neuroscience, by answering a specific question, such as
“Why do humans sleep?” Pure research is based on experimentation and observation.
The results of your research are published in peer-reviewed journals. This is science.
Rigorous standards and methodologies exist to preserve objectivity and ensure the
credibility of conclusions. [6]
Pure research is a research approach that is entirely theoretical and aimed at
improving or expanding the knowledge-base of a particular field of study. It focuses
on "knowledge for its own sake" and it is primarily driven by curiosity and the need
to explore the unknown. It is also known as fundamental or basic research and it is a
systematic investigation set to achieve a better and more detailed understanding of a
research subject or phenomenon, not to solve a specific problem. [7].
2. Applied research borrows ideas and techniques from pure research to serve a specific
real-world goal. Goals are like creating a super soldier or improving the quality of
hospital care or finding new ways to market any product. While ethics are as
important, and methods can be more relaxed. By this, I meant changing the questions
you ask while doing a study, or making the most of an imperfect sample group
because you’re tight on time. Your research is successful only to the extent that it
adds to the stated goal. As with pure research, sometimes you accidentally discover
something valuable you weren’t even looking for, and that’s a fantastic bonus [6]

Applied research is designed to focus on providing practical solutions to a specific
problem. It is a form of investigation that entails solution-oriented inquiries into a
phenomenon,a field of study or research subject generally employing empirical
methodologies. In many cases, applied research is a follow-up research design for
basic research because it further investigates the outcomes of pure or basic research in
order to validate these findings and apply them to create innovative solutions to
specific problems. [7]
C. Briefly describe the nature and characteristics of research
The nature of research is it is systematic enquiry whose goal is communicable
knowledge. It is systematic because it is pursued according to 'some plan, an enquiry
because it seeks to find answers to questions, goal-directed because the objects of the
enquiry are posed by the task description, knowledge-directed because the findings of the
enquiry must go beyond providing mere information and communicable because the
findings must be intelligible to, and located within some framework of understanding for,
an appropriate audience [8].
Some characteristics of research are it is empirical because it is based on direct
experience and observation of the researcher. Research is logical also because scientific
investigation is done in an orderly manner. Cyclical because it starts with a problem and
ends with a problem. Analytical because research utilizes proven analytical procedures.
Replicable also cause research design can be replicated for validation of results. And
lastly it is critical because it exhibits careful and precise judgements [9].
