Module 25 Roa BSCE 2-A

Lester Khiets Roa answered 5 questions about basketball for a course assignment. The questions covered violations in basketball like out of bounds, traveling, and closely guarded player. Roa explained the difference between offense and defense, with offense trying to exploit weaknesses and defense countering strengths. As a coach, Roa would focus on defense since it can be controlled and leads to fast breaks, while offense cannot be controlled. Roa agrees with the quote that defense wins championships since it provides consistency throughout a season or tournament.

Answer the following question:

1. What is a violation? (5pts.)
Violations are infringement of the rules that are penalized with a turnover.
2. What is the difference between offense and defense? (5pts.)
The goal of offense is to get the greatest shot possible. It's all about passing
the ball, moving the ball, screening for teammates, and putting yourself in the
greatest position to get your teammate or yourself the best shot. It's an action that
tries to exploit the defense's flaws. Defense, on the other hand, is chosen to
counteract the offense's strengths and flaws. It is the act of a player or players within
the court attempting to prevent an opponent from shooting, stealing the ball,
deflecting passes, or grabbing rebounds.

3. What are the different situations in the game where violations happened and give
examples of these violations? (10pts.)
a. Player out-of-bounds and ball out-of-bounds

The type of violation is when the ball goes out of bounds when the ball
carrier steps outside of the court or even on the line the referee calls and out of
bounds. For example, when the defense of the opponent is very tight and the
player unnoticeably steps on the line or outside of the court, automatically the
referee calls for this violation.

b. Dribbling

This violation is called when tapping the ball from the control of another
player, tossing the ball from hand to hand and allowing it to come to rest in one or
both hands before touching the floor, provided that no travelling violation is
committed, and also, throwing the ball against the backboard and regaining the
control of the ball. The ball cannot be held in the air while travelling around the
court. By elevating the ball into the air with your hand, you cannot palm it. You
can't pause and then resume dribbling. When a player did all the situations
mentioned, the referee will automatically call for a violation.

c. Travelling
This happens when you move with the ball without dribbling. If the pivot
foot moves or leaves on the ground of the player that receives the ball, it will
result to a travel. Also, if the player takes 3 steps without dribbling, travelling
violation will be called. It is a violation which is penalized with a turn over to the
other team.

d. Three Seconds

In offense, a player can stay in the key for longer than three seconds at a
time. To earn another three seconds the player has to get both feet outside the
key before going back in. The violation is in called if the player is coming out of
the key or if one of the team is take a shot at the end of these three seconds.

e. Closely guarded player

“Closely guarded” violations can occur in the back court and the front
court. This violation takes place when an offensive player with the ball is guarded
closely for five seconds or more by an opponent who is in active legal guarding
position at a distance of no more than one meter. He must pass, shoot, or dribble
within the five seconds.

f. Eight seconds

When a team gets the ball within their own half of the court including on
turnovers, they have eight seconds to get the ball into the opponent’s half. This
violation occurs when the team with possession does not advance the ball out of
the back court past the half-court line in 8 seconds.

g. Twenty-Four Seconds

Attacking team has 24 to attempt a field goal from the moment they take
possession of the ball. If by the end of the 24 seconds and the team still hasn’t
taken a shot, the referee will whistle and turn the ball over to the other team.

h. Ball returned to the backcourt

In offense, a team in possession of the ball in the opponent’s half court

and not retreat back into their own half otherwise a ball returned to the backcourt
is called. The ball is considered over as soon as it crosses the center line.

i. Goaltending and Interference

This violation happens when one or more than one player interferes with the
ball. It occurs during a goal attempt.  For example, one player touches or interfere the
ball that has the chance to score. Goaltending only happens when the ball is coming
towards the hoop in a downward slope and is interfered with before it reaches the
imaginary cylinder. Also, if the ball touches the backboard and is in a downward
slope towards the hoop and is interfered with outside the imaginary cylinder, it is a
violation.

4. As a basketball coach, which do you think you will focus defense or offense?
Explain your choice. (5pts.)

As a basketball coach, I will place a greater emphasis on defensive

preparation for my team. I believe that concentrating more on the defensive side of
the game will benefit our team more than concentrating on the offensive side. I
noticed when watching basketball games either on the television or in actual game
that the team with the best defense plan and training foundation has a significant
edge since they can position themselves appropriately, steal the ball from the
opponent, and score more points on fast breaks. Offense is something I can't
control; however, defense is something I can as a coach.

5. What is your reaction about this quote “Offense wins games, but defense wins
championships.” (5pts.)

I believe and I agree with the quote, "Offense wins games, but defense wins
championships." Yes, offense can lead you to victory after a game, but I believe if

you focus on offense, it has no consistency to lead you until the end of the season or
tournament and win the championship, whereas defense is something you can
control and lead you to victory in every game until the championship game. Playing
outstanding defense will help you score more points and win championships.
Looking back in history and in the records of the teams that won championships in
NBA, the teams that have won are the teams that has a tight and excellent defense
play. When you have good defensive strategy, offense follows.
