LESSON 3: CONTEXTUALIZED ONLINE SEARCH AND RESEARCH SKILLS

Challenge Question:
Are you a smarter user of search engines?

- It depends, if I understand the question is not that hard then why do I need to use
search engines when I'm able to use what I have in my brain and able to answer it. If I
found the question quite challenging then I’ll use it, for me to understand and to had
more knowledge in what I search for.

Do you always rely on the first search online?

- No, there’s a lot of results which you can get more info and ideas, I just had to pick the
relevant and more understandable answer for me to understand the question, and I'm
able to put my ideas too.

Have you Googled yourself lately? Are you happy with the results?
- No, I don't think I'm going to be at the search engine of Google, and yes, I'm happy
with the result because I want to be private, not putting so much on social media.

How do you find answers to questions from the simple to the complex?
- For the simple question I tend to think of my own, I used the ideas and knowledge that
I have. With complex, well I input my ideas as well but I do search to expand my answer
for me to satisfied my answer for the complex question.

Google might naturally come to mind right? Did you know that you could also use
Wolfram as an alternative search engine?
- Yes, sometimes Google comes to mind, but I did not know about Wolfram as an
alternative search engine because it is new to me.
ACTIVITY #1: On the next opportunity that you have an Internet connection, do the following
―What Matters in a Query‖ search tips. To validate the results of your search, get a
screenshot of the resulting scenarios/ write at least 5 result links then write your observation on
your yellow pad.

What Matters in a Query?

1. Every word matters.

Try searching for [who], [the who], and [a who]

2. Order matters.

Try searching for [blue sky] and [sky blue]

3. Capitalization does not matter.

Try searching for [barack obama] and [Barack Obama]

4. Punctuation does not matter.

Try searching for [red, delicious% apple&] and [red delicious

apple]
5. There are exceptions!
$ C# C++ Google+

Can you think of any? but not ¶ £€©®÷§%() or @

These are the screenshots of the resulting scenarios:

Who
The Who

A Who
Blue sky

Sky blue

barack obama
Barack Obama

red, delicious% apple&

red delicious apple

C++
My observation in this activity is that it concentrates on the way how you enter these
words, and how these choices impact the results. I also observed that Google ignores
most special characters, but searches a few of them, and like (blue sky and sky blue), the
order in which you type words matters, but capitalization doesn’t matter just like (barack
obama and Barack Obama) still the results are still the same. I also observed that
Punctuation is mostly ignored.
Activity #2
List 12 best search engines available online.

1. Google

2. Yahoo

3. Bing

4. Baidu

5. AOL

6. Ask.com

7. Excite

8. Wolfram Alpha

9. DuckDuckGo

10. Yandex

11. Lycos

12. Chacha.com

Activity #3
Discussions: Based from what you have learned, discuss the following terms:
1. Search Engines
2. Age-appropriate Results
3. URL
Search Engines – allows the user to quickly and easily find the information you wanted
to know and learn. It able to provide the user to determine the information about brands,
products and services that has access online. It’s the first thing we look if we wanted to
search and get answers.
Age-appropriate Results – as I learn some social media and online platforms require the
age of the user it’s because they need to protect the minor to avoid content that are not
suitable for them. There are platform that reflect the user age so that they able to
determine if that content is applicable for their age. Every platform has its age-
appropriate for the safety of minor user and age also determine if they are old enough to
understand the content of the platform.
URL—is to pinpoint exactly what you search for, its immediately identify the address and
access to the link webpage that you want to open. It is very useful to use the URL it
because you were directly open to the page and site.
Self-Reflection:
How do I know which information are relevant and reliable?

The information is relevant if you need to verify the information, the source and
objective of the information as well. Each research should be deep and complex to get
more important detail. Reliable on the other hand is, its verified, trusted and accuracy of
the source.

How do I evaluate if it is a fake news?

To evaluate fake news is to do more research, look more information and ask
people who are legit that know about the news. I know we can still be fool with fake news
but as Generic ad said “Huwag Mahiyang Magtanong” (Don’t be shy to ask) it’s true for
us to get the real news, information and source were able share and spread the truth and
not the fake one.

I learned that…

We should always check who published the source, the purpose of the source,
when it was created/updated, and its content. Also, we should see if it has any
potential bias and, if a webpage, provides references or reliable links to other
sources. Also, I learned the use of critical thinking to identify fake news because
critical thinking provides a means to critically engage by looking for evidence to
support claims of fake news.
Evaluation:

Direction: Read each item carefully and choose the letter of the correct answer. Write your
answers on a separate sheet of paper.
