This section was developed to provide Class 5 Interference-FitScrew


Threads for the Federal Services. It is a repl.acexentfor FED-STD-H28 Appendix 11
of 31 March 1978.

FSD-S’IWH28/23 was prepard by the Defense Industrial Supply Center


(DLA-IS)and inmrprates the American National Standard ASME~I ‘B1.12-1987.
Significant changes from the supersealedFSD-SID-H28 Appendix 11 include the
following:

(1) Acceptability in accordance with FEESTD-H28/20.

(2) Mme definitive information on Class 5 threads ard


their design.

(3) Dimensional data for wrk ing and setting thread gages.

(4) F@ccmmdations on thread lead, flank angle ad runout control.

(5) F@mval of design guidance on fine threads. Interference-fitfine


threads are not reconmmded.

(6) Mdition of specifications for elastic interference-fitthreads


and ~ially nudificd plastic flow interference-fitthreads used
with nickel-ccpper-aluminumexternally thre?xkd parta for w in
Navy ahips.

(7) Tables of the cbaolete tentative ad eltermte Class 5 thread


standards for identificationof threads used on old drawings.

5.2 Non-standard thread sizes. For thread sizes not listed in 5.1 above,
limiting dimensions for all characteristics which must be controlled shall be
specified. tion-s~dard threads shall be identified as W-5; only standard
threads are designated NC-5.

Note: Ncn-standard size threads should be tested prior to apprcwal


to assure satisfactory performance.

5.3 Matinq part materials. t4aterialcombinations not listed in section
1.2 are non-standard. Limiting dimnsions for all characteristica which must
be rmntrol.ledshall be apecified. Non-standard threads shall be identified
as W-5.

Note: Non-standard threads should be tested prior to apprmal to


assure satisfactory performance. If testing demonstrates that
standard threads may be applied to non-standard material
combinations, the applicable standard thread designation is,used.
