Refugee Crisis

Refugee crisis can refer to a large number of displaced persons. They can be internally
displaced persons, refugees or other immigrants, events in their country of origin, or problems
encountered during the migration process, or problems in the host country involving a large
number of displaced persons after arrival , The country of asylum seekers or refugees.

The most common causas are war and civil war, human rights violations, environment and
climate issues, and economic hardship. A example of a cause is the civil war in Syria that
forced many people to immigrate to another countries.

Since 2011, Syria has been plunged into a civil war, which has plunged the country into
chaos. According to the UN refugee agency, more than 12 million people have been
displaced so far. Approximately 13.1 million people need humanitarian assistance. As of
October 2020, about 2.6 million Syrian children are living as refugees and about 2.5
million children are living as internally displaced persons.

Syrians fleeing the conflict currently live in more than 125 countries, but most have
sought refuge in neighboring countries, including Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq, and
Egypt. It is estimated that 8% of Syrian refugees live in camps such as Zaatari and Azraq
in Jordan, while another 92% live in urban and rural areas.

It is estimated that during the COVID-19 pandemic, approximately 167 countries

around the world have completely or partially closed their borders. 57 states are no
exception for asylum seekers. Many countries use the pandemic as an excuse to deny
refugees access to land and water borders. Countries such as Italy and Malta have
closed refugee ports. Most refugees (up to 90%) arriving on the coast of Europe set off
from Libya, where they fled the civil war in Libya .

The term boat people became popular in the 1970s with the outflow of Vietnamese
refugees after the Vietnam War. This is a widely used form of immigration for people
who immigrate from Cuba, Haiti, Morocco, Vietnam or Albania. They often risk their
lives on dangerous rough and crowded ships to escape the oppression or poverty in
their own country. The events caused by the Vietnam War led many people in
Cambodia, Laos, and especially Vietnam to become refugees in the late 1970s and
1980s. In 2001, 353 asylum seekers who sailed from Indonesia to Australia drowned
when their ship sank.

Here is a table of number of refugees in which part of the planet during the last years:

In my opinion we should still have hope, even though the last two years have been two
difficult years that have increased the refugee crisis even more, because every day more
agreements to receive refugees are being closed and the number of African refugees,
for example, has decreased in comparison to the 90's, which means that if we continue
in this phase we will have a much more equal world for everyone.
