Unit #4 - Sending and Receiving Games

Physical Education - Grade 2/3

Unit Length: November 3 - November 25 (9/10 classes)
Teacher: Aquinna Brokenshire

Unit Rationale
This unit was designed to include a variety of games that children can play in order to
work on their sending and receiving skills. These skills are useful for children of this age group
as they will help these children in a variety of sports that they could go on to play. These games
are accessible for all skill levels. By playing games instead of playing a particular sport I am
ensuring that the skills of all students are able to be used and that there won’t be only a handful
of students that are able to adequately play, leaving the others behind. All types of throwing will
be explored, including overhand, underhand, two handed from chest and two handed from
behind the head.

Unit Overview
This unit will start off with a class where we practice the different types of throwing. Iin
partners, students will take turns passing the ball back and forth as I instruct them on the proper
throwing techniques. After this we will get into games, starting with Boom City where students
will be throwing and catching balls from across the gym. After this we have throwing centres,
which will take a couple classes. In groups, students will rotate through different centres
designed to help them work on their throwing skills. After this we have a multitude of games that
use different equipment to be thrown (balls and hula hoops) as well as different targets to throw
at. By switching up equipment and targets the goal is to keep students interested and engaged
in what they are doing so that it doesn’t become boring for them.

Contextual Information
This unit is taking place at Senator Buchanan school in Lethbridge. Senator Buchanan
has a high population of ELL students, so I am expecting there to be some language barriers
with at least some of my students. I am hoping that by starting the unit off by going over different
throwing techniques and vocabulary these students will feel more confident and have a better
understanding of what everything means. I am also hoping that while students are playing the
native English speakers can help the ELLs if there are any issues related to
language/understanding while playing.
In terms of assessment, each day I will have a different outcome that I am assessing the
students on (outcomes are listed in the table below). The outcomes may vary between the
grade 2s and 3s depending on what that SLO is in the programs of study between the two
grades.
