Design Studio 1 Report

This document provides the structural design and detailing of slabs, beams, columns, and footings for a 2 BHK high-rise residential apartment building under gravity loads. Key aspects include: - Structural analysis and design is carried out as per IS 456-2000 for gravity loads. - The structure consists of reinforced concrete slabs, beams, columns, and footings. Slab depths are designed as 125mm. Beams are sized as 230mm x 450mm. - Design of individual structural elements like slabs, beams, columns, and footings is presented along with load calculations and detailing. - Slab design includes calculating effective depth and span, load patterns, and reinforcement detailing

1.1 General Information

• In this task, an architectural plan of a residential apartment was provided. Our

scope of work was to analyze the structure under Gravity Loads, Design and Detail
out the structural elements of slabs, beams, column and footing.
• Wind and Seismic forces are not taken into consideration. The design steps are
conforming to Limit State Philosophy with reference of IS 456-2000 Plain and
Reinforced Concrete, IS 875 Part 1 & 2.
• Structural analysis and design of the structure under the effects of gravity loads,
in the compliance with IS 456-2000 is being carried out.
• TOC levels are assumed at 3.0 mt. height interval
• Covers are taken as 20 mm, 30 mm, 40 mm and 50 mm for slabs, beams, columns
and footings respectively.
1.2 Typical Layout Plan
• As per the architectural layout, 2 apartments, each of 2 BHK are being provided on each floor.
• Each apartment has a built-up area of 65.5 sq. mt. consisting living room, kitchen, dining, 2 bedrooms, 2 toilets, balcony and wash
area.
• The houses are being divided with a huge common area consisting foyer, 2 lift shafts and an open-well type staircase, summing up
to 69.5 sq. mt.
• Refuge Balcony of 14 sq. mt. is provided on 5th, 8th and 12th floor for fire evacuation.
1.3 Structural Configuration
• All the slabs provided in the buildings are either one way or two way, simply supported, which helped to control and limit the
depth of all the slabs to 125 mm.
• Considering the frames passing through the structure and taking the length of spans into account, total 22 no. of columns are
decided to be placed.
• All the beams are sized as 230 mm * 450 mm.
• As the out-to-out length of the longer side of the apartment is less than 30 mt., expansion joint is not required (IS 456-2000)
2.1 Design of Slabs
Slab Numbering
• Elementary slab design consists of calculation of depth, span and total acting
loads.
• Secondary slab design includes combining the slabs into various strips which
make them act as continuous slabs, and finding the load pattern according to
Rankine-Grashoff theory. Slabs which cannot become a part of any strip are
calculated individually with the help of coefficients provided in IS 456-2000.

Reinforcement Details
• Each slab has uniform overall depth; 125 mm.
• Each slab is to be reinforced with 251 mm2 area of steel calculated with minimum
percentage required, a uniform mesh of 8 mm Ø @ 200 mm c/c is being provided.
• For one-way slabs, the distribution steel is also calculated as minimum percentage
of steel, i.e., 8 mm Ø @ 200 mm c/c
• Considering Alternate bent-ups in detailing pattern, the extra top bars required at
the intermediate supports will also be of 8 mm Ø @ 200 mm c/c

2.2 Beams

• Elementary slab design consists of calculation of depth, span and total acting
loads.
• Secondary slab design includes combining the slabs into various strips which
make them act as continuous slabs, and finding the load pattern according to
Rankine-Grashoff theory. Slabs which cannot become a part of any strip are
calculated individually with the help of coefficients provided in IS 456-2000
