LATIHAN SOAL EXPLANATION TEXT
New glass bottles are made mainly of silica sand. The sand is melted in a furnace, at a very high
temperature. Recycled glass bottles are made in a very similar way, but cost less and use up fewer
natural resources
The process begins when people take their used bottles and jars to a bottle bank. Next, the bottles
and jars are taken by lorry to the recycling plant. At the plant, bottle tops and lids are removed. After
that, the glass is crushed into small pieces. The crushed glass is then sent by lorry to a bottle factory.
Here, it is mixed with a small amount of silica sand. It is then melted in a furnace, at a lower
temperature than a new glass. Finally, the hot liquid glass is drawn out of the furnace and fed into
machinery that makes it into bottles
The recycled glass is pure and as strong as the new glass. The glass can be recycled many times
without losing its quality

Mosquitoes
It is possible to find mosquitoes in almost every part of the world, except in the places where they
are extremely cold or very dry. During summer, it is almost certain that you can find mosquitoes
near swamps, ponds and lake.
Mosquitoes have an interesting life cycle. First, the female mosquito has to bite a person or
an animal in order to draw blood. It needs blood before it can lay eggs. Second, it flies to an area of
water and deposits its eggs in the water. In a few days the eggs hatch and the babies mosquitoes
called larvae, emerge. In a short time, they will mature and fly away.
It is interesting to note that only the female will bite for blood. It has a special mouth which
can go into an animal or person’s skin. Meanwhile, the male mosquito can only drink plant juice with
its mouth
5. Why does the female mosquitoes bite a
person or animal?
A. The person or animal is not protected
B. It needs blood for flying

E. The person or animal has too much
blood

mosquitoes

Dangerous

juice

It is already known that oil was formed from the remains of plants and animals that lived in
the oceans many millions of years ago. The most familiar plants and animals thad had formed oil
were algae plankton. They were accumulated on the seabed and were buried under layer of
sediment. They were not decomposed because the sediment preserved them from process of
decomposition. Instead, the organic matters were transformed by the action of bacteria into
substance called kerogen. Over a long periods of time, further layers of sediment produced
increased temperatured and pressure, which changed the kerogen into many different
hydrocarbons.
Atoms of carbon and hydrogen join together in a number of characteristic arrangements to
form hydrocarbon molecules. The smallest and simplest hydrocarbon is methane, which has a
molecule consisting of a single carbon atom surrounded by four hydrogen atoms. Larger and more
complex hydrocarbons have molecules made up of a chain or ring of carbons atoms. Benzene has a
molecule consisting of six carbon atom that form a ring; each atom has one hydrogen atom. Hexane
consists of a chain of six carbon atoms. The first and the last atom of the chain have three hydrogen
atoms, while the four carbon atoms in the middle have two hydrogen atoms each. That’s why crude
oil can be thick and dark or ple and thin
9. The following statements are true, EXCEPT …
A. Oi is made from dead plants and animals
B. The bacteria transformed the algae plankton into kerogen
C. Hydrocarbons were formed from Kerogen
D. Methane consists of a carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms
E. Benzene has six hydrogen atoms
10. Crude oil can be thick and dark, or pale and thin because of …
A. The different area
B. The number of atoms
C. The weather
D. Typees of the fossils
E. The depth of the well

Hello. Have you ever heard about "Cire Perdue" or "Lost Wax"? Guess what. Right. "Cire Perdua is
French. Lost Wax is very close to metai sculpture. Well, let me explain.
Clre Perdue (French, "lost wax") is a process of wax casting used in making metal sculpture. A model
is coated with wax. The solidified wax is encased in a two-layer mold of plaster or clay. Hmm... it is
then melted or otherwise removed from the mold, and metal is poured into the space where the
wax had been. Oh,I almost forgot, after cooling, the mold is broken to free the metal object. This
ancient method is used to produce sculpture, jewelry, and utilitarian products such as dentures.
Okay. Is it clear? Not yet. How about going to the library and finding more information about Lost
Wax? See you and good luck.
