Need for caste-category based reservation in 2020
Caste category-based reservations refer to reserved seats in public institutions and public jobs for
backward castes like SCs, STs and OBCs. This system was first established post independence to
uplift the poor castes to the status of general category but even after 73 years of independence this
system still prevails.
In my opinion, all caste reservations should be abolished, benefits and opportunities should be given
to individuals based on their competence and ability and not on the basis of their caste. Many able
and deserving individuals lose out on opportunities to undeserving candidates on the pretext of their
caste.
Legally speaking, there are no provisions in the Indian Constitution stating that caste-based
reservation is mandatory. The provisions in Articles 15(4), 16(4), and 16(4A) are only enabling
provisions and do not state for requirements oof reservations.
Article 15 talks about equality and how no individual should be deprived of opportunities due to
circumstances. Equality means each individual or group of people is given the same
resources or opportunities to fulfil their goals while Equity recognizes that each person has
different circumstances and allocates the exact resources and opportunities needed to reach
an equal outcome. Reservations work on the principle of equity and not equality.
While I agree that special help should be given to students of backward castes on an elementary or
a higher secondary teaching to uplift them in their base years. However, giving them a free pass in
matters concerning the functioning and well-being of the country, is wrong. It is more wrong to the
backward castes as it is for the general category as an impression is created among youth that they
need not study and work hard because even without doing so they will get admission or a job.
If reservations prevail, our country will be led by incompetent and favoured youth, which has
and will prove to be disastrous in the long run.
