Abstract:
This experiment is performed to determine the percentage composition of binary mixture
(ethanol -water) by measuring the refractive index with the help of abbe’s refractometer and
then graph is plotted between percentage composition and refractive index.
Introduction:
.Distillation:
Distillation refers to the selective boiling and subsequent condensation of a component in a
liquid mixture
Binary mixture:
A binary mixture is a kind of homogenous mixture, in which the mixture of two liquid is
completely miscible with each other.
Refractive index:
The refractive index is the measure of bending of a light ray when passing from one medium to
another. Or the ratio of the velocity of a light ray in an empty space to the velocity of light in a
substance, n = c/v

It is symbolically represent as n or n’ .refractive index is a dimensionless number and measure
by using Snell’s law.
n=c/v
n = sini /sin r
R = n-1/ n2 + 1. 1/ ꝭ
Rm = n2 -1 / n2 +1 .[Link]/ꝭ
Abbe refractometer:
This instrument measures the refractive index and mean dispersion values of transparent and
translucent liquids or solids.
