Muscles of Hand

The document describes the intrinsic muscles of the hand grouped into three categories: thenar muscles in the thumb region, hypothenar muscles in the small finger region, and interossei and lumbrical muscles in the palm. Key muscles in each group are named along with their actions. The document also outlines the innervation of each muscle group.

Dorsal Interossei
• 4 bipennate muscles.
• Origin: via two heads from adjacent sides of two
metacarpals.
• Insertion:
- Radial sides of proximal phalanges 2 and 3;
- Ulnar sides of proximal phalanges 3 and 4.
Note: digit 3 has two dorsal interossei.
• Action: Abducts MP joints of digits.
Palmar Interossei
• 4 unipennate muscles:
- Adduction of MP joints of 1st, 2nd, 4th, and 5th
fingers towards the middle finger.
• Innervation for all interossei by Ulnar nerve
Lumbricals
• 4 small, narrow, elongated muscles.
• Origin: from the radial side of a flexor digitorum
profundus tendon.
• Insertion: extensor expansion of the medial 4
fingers.
• Innervation:
Two on radial side: Median nerve
Two on ulnar side: Ulnar nerve
• Action: Flex MCP joints and extend IP joints put
the hand in writing position.
Innervation of intrinsic Muscles of
the hand

- Thenar muscles:
by median nerve except adductor pollicis (by
ulnar n.).
- Hypothenar muscles: by ulnar nerve.
- Interossei muscles: palmar and dorsal by
Ulnar nerve
- Lumbrical muscles:
Two on radial side: Median nerve
Two on ulnar side: Ulnar nerve
