The table below shows the percentage of time Internet users spent on the eight most popular online
activities in 2007 and 2009.

The table shows that there were significant changes in how Internet users spent their time online
over a two-year period.
Overall, in 2009 users continued to spend a large share of their time online interacting with
others; however, their preferred way of doing so had changed.
The most significant change was in the way users communicated online. The use of social
networking increased significantly from fourteen per cent to twenty per cent. However, this
appears to be at the expense of other forms of online communication, namely email and instant
messaging, which both declined sharply to only nine per cent and six per cent respectively of total
activity.
Another noticeable trend was the relatively small increase in entertainment-related activities,
such as watching videos and downloading music, with each climbing one percentage point. Other
activities, which can be seen as more practical such as searching for information, online banking,
and assessing the news remained constant at a relatively low four, three, and two percent
respectively.

The table shows that over the last ten years there has been an exponential increase in Internet use
worldwide. The number of Internet users expanded nearly five-fold, with the proportion of the
world’s population enjoying Internet access now standing at nearly thirty per cent.

3. Bodies:
There are two ways to analyze the table:
1. Compare countries, you can combine the first three countries in the first body
paragraph and the other two in the remaining one. However, in this way, it is quite
difficult to compare all 5 countries at the same time, affecting your coherence. If you
can, just give it a go.
2. Compare categories. This is the way I strongly recommend due to the fact that when
you analyze one category, you can easily compare the data of 5 nations and
immediately can make use of the structure of describing 1 pie chart that showed you
in the previous lesson.
If you choose the second method, you should follow this instruction.
Body 1: Describe the first category (food/drinks/tobacco) – Try to make sure of the
pie chart structure.
Body 2: Describe the other two categories.
The second category (clothing and footwear) – Max 1 is Italy, while Ireland, Spain and
Turkey share quite the same value (about 6.5%).
The third category (Leisure and education) – Max 1 is Turkey while the other’s data is
lower than 4%.
