Capacitance: 1-Two Parallel Plate Capacitor

The document discusses capacitance and different types of capacitors. It defines capacitance as the ratio of charge (Q) to potential (V). Capacitance depends on the dimensions and material properties of the capacitor, not the charge or potential. Common capacitor types discussed include parallel plate, parallel plate with multiple dielectrics, cylindrical capacitors. Formulas are provided for calculating the capacitance of these different capacitor configurations. Examples are worked through to demonstrate calculating capacitance values.

Capacitance
Capacitance is defined as the ratio between charge and potential; that is,
it indicates the amount of charge a body can store for a given, applied
potential. Using this definition, anybody has a certain capacitance, but, as
we shall see, even though capacitance relates charge and potential, the
capacitance itself is independent of charge or potential; it is a function of
body dimensions and material properties. Any device which has
capacitance may be called a capacitor. The general definition of
capacitance is:
𝑄
𝐶= 𝐹𝑎𝑟𝑎𝑑
𝑉𝑜

In general term, we determine Q by a surface integral over the positive

conductor, and we find V by carrying a unit positive charge from the
negative to the positive surface.

There are many example and types of capacitance, so we study:
1- Two parallel plate capacitor:

Now to find the capacitance of two parallel plates if (+Q) placed on the
upper plate and (-Q) on the lower plate.
