FROM THE PULPIT

“I have come that you might have life and have it abundantly”
John 10

The whole Good News of the Easter Gospel is here: Jesus proclaims that His purpose is to bring
life and to bring it ABUNDANTLY. The key word in this scripture used in the May lectionary is
NOT life BUT abundantly. A heart might be beating and a body functioning, but life within
might be dull and meaningless. Jesus came to bring us life in all its abundance.

Easter has given us the assurance of eternal life, but life with God does not begin when we pass
from this life into eternity. We cannot be so enamored of eternal life that we gaze heavenward and
ignore the world around us. Indeed, some say, “Christians are so heavenly-minded they are no
earthly good.” If we think only of life after death, that might be correct.

In Jesus we are given not only life in eternity, but full and abundant life on earth. Jesus is not only
a sacrifice for sin, but also a model of how we are to live our life. In the Gospels we see how he
Himself lived the abundant life, demonstrating in daily life His new commandment: Love one
another.

Experience all around us shows how human life can be heartless and miserable. Listen to any
newscast, and you see that. Life can also be filled with joy. As Jesus walked up and down the
Holy Land, He brought a sense of joy and happiness into all the lives He touched.

We can imagine...
...how people enjoyed being with Him...
...how heads were held higher and shoulders squared when He was there...
...how people were more kind to each other after spending time with Him...
...how they listened to His pure word of truth...
...how, through Him, they met the Creator of the universe...
...how others felt unconditional love, total acceptance, and freeing forgiveness.

YES! Jesus' resurrection gives us eternal life later, but it also opens for us all the joy and fullness
of human life right now.
