Reading Comprehension

Comprehension is an understanding of the meaning of the reading passage. It is the main goal
of teaching children to read. It is life-long learning. When a child is learning to read it is
important to emphasize to the reader how to be aware of his/her understanding of the
material being read, being able to answer who, what, where, when, and why questions about
the plot, and facts that are happening as you read the passage. Stress the importance of asking
questions frequently as they read, to predict what they think is going to happen next.
One of the key requirements of the Common Core State Standards for reading NGA and CCSSO
is that all students must be able to comprehend texts of steadily increasing complexity as they
progress through school. Taken from the Teaching Reading Sourcebook pg. 610

asking questions, making connections, deciding on the importance of the text, teaching students to form
a mental picture, and synthesizing information. She guides you on teaching children to make their
thinking visible through oral, written, artistic and dramatic responses. She gives explicit lessons on how
this is done.
